South Korea’s LG has become the first smart TV maker to add Dolby Atmos support for Apple Music to its compatible smart TVs such as the GX OLED TV.

LG’s OLED TVs from 2018 onward and QNED models Q90T and above now support Dolby Atmos multi-channel audio on Apple Music. In doing so, LG became the first smart TV manufacturer to support the format in the built-in Apple Music app.

LG says there’s no need to adjust the volume when listening to Dolby Atmos tracks, thanks to the implementation of the loudness normalization algorithm.

LG TVs gaining Dolby Atmos support on Apple Music

“In addition, even on LG Smart TVs not supported by Dolby Atmos, users can still enjoy mesmerizing sound of Apple Music in Spatial Audio by connecting to a Dolby Atmos LG soundbar,” the company notes.
According to FlatpanelsHD, all LG TVs compatible with Dolby Atmos from 2020 onwards should get this feature. Check the Apple Music app’s settings on your LG TV to see if Dolby Atmos is enabled. LG’s TVs can also directly connect to AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones to enjoy the Dolby Atmos audio experience.

3 free months of Apple Music

Additionally, LG is treating owners of its 2018 and later smart TV lineup, StanbyME, StanbyME Go and MyView Smart Monitor to three free months of Apple Music. According to LG’s press release, the 3-month free trial is available within the Music app on the 2018 and later products running webOS 4.0 and higher.

How do Dolby Atmos and spatial audio work?

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound audio format developed by Dolby Laboratories that treats each sound as a virtual object that can be placed anywhere in a 3D space with neither horizontal nor vertical limitations. Dolby Atmos works best when you have a bunch of speakers, which requires external hardware like a Hi-Fi receiver.

With only two speakers in your iPhone, Apple uses various computational audio techniques and audio filters when you play Dolby Atmos content to simulate a 3D soundscape. Called spatial audio, such tricks can make your ears believe that the sound is all around you even though it’s coming from the left and right channels.

What Apple devices support Dolby Atmos?

LG uses similar tricks to render Dolby Atmos audio on the built-in speakers, though the company recommends using a proper multi-channel surround system to make the most of the format. On Apple devices, Dolby Atmos is supported on the built-in speakers, Apple and Beats headphones and HomePod and HomePod mini speakers.

Dolby Atmos is also supported on Apple TV 4K when Sonos speakers or your HomePod is set as the default audio output or your Apple TV is connected to a Dolby Atmos-capable sound bar, AV receiver or television set.
