iPad Pro to get “the best OLED tablet panels,” meaning even higher prices

Apple will equip its iPad Pro with “by far the best OLED tablet panels on the market,” but premium display technology may come at a steep price.

The next iPad Pro should be unveiled at Apple’s “Let Loose” event, with the adoption of OLED panels replacing IPS LCD screens expected to be the main theme.

Display Supply Chain Consultants expects these upcoming OLED iPad Pros to have “by far the best OLED tablet panels on the market” with support for ProMotion, Apple’s 120Hz dynamic refresh rate technology (like the current models).

OLED iPad Pros may support ProMotion and Always-On

The research firm claims these OLED panels will help Apple create “ultra-thin and light displays with high brightness, extended battery life and long lifetime.”

That’s because the OLED iPad Pros are expected to use LPT or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide. Apple originally developed this technology to bring ProMotion and Always-On display to its iPhone. It’s safe to assume that the OLED iPad Pro will also support Always-On functionality and dynamic screen refresh rates.

Compared with LCD IPS technology in the 11-inch iPad Pro, OLEDs bring perks like deeper blacks, better contrast, higher brightness and higher resolutions.

Say goodbye to the unwanted blooming effect

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses mini-LED, an array of tiny LED chips that form backlight. They’re grouped in zones to provide local dimming, which leads to the unwanted blooming effect. With OLED, each pixel is its own light source. Since no backlight is necessary, no blooming is exhibited.

Because there’s no backlight, the whole display assembly can be thinner. Display Supply Chain Consultants claims the OLED iPad Pros will sport “ultra-thin and light displays.” CAD drawings that leaked earlier suggest the bigger OLED iPad Pro could be just 5mm thin, a thickness reduction of 1.4mm.

OLED panels are pricey—what else is new?

Major technological changes are when Apple likes to rethink its pricing strategy. For example, iPhone X was Apple’s first OLED phone and the first iPhone to break the $1000 barrier. Of course, most premium phones now cost north of $1000. but back in 2017, a $1000 smartphone was unheard of.

Apple justified the price increase with the cost of OLED panels. By some estimates, Samsung initially sold OLEDs to Apple at a steep premium. Apple now sources OLED panels from multiple suppliers, but they are still costlier than LCD IPS screens.

How much will the OLED iPad Pro cost?

This won’t change anytime soon, and if Apple’s past behavior applies here, then the OLED iPad Pro might end up costing more than the already pricey LCD models. And knowing how Apple likes to upsell people to pricier devices, we bet the current LCD models will remain in the lineup at current prices.

What we don’t expect is for the OLED iPad Pro to cost the same as the current LCD ones or for those models to drop in price when the OLED models arrive.
