How to check if genuine parts were used to repair your iPhone

Find out how to check your iPhone repair history to see if genuine Apple parts like battery, camera, or display were used to perform the repair.

When your iPhone’s battery needs replacement, or you have to get a faulty part repaired, your options are to:

  • Take it to an Apple Store or authorized service center
  • Repair it yourself using parts and instructions from Apple (Self Service Repair)
  • Get it fixed by an unauthorized service center (which Apple does not recommend)

Once your iPhone is repaired, you can check if the parts used are genuine and everything is correct. It’s also important to check this when you’re buying a second-hand iPhone.

Important: Even if your iPhone has an unknown part, it won’t affect your ability to use your device; however some features may not work properly. More on it later.

Check for genuine parts and service history of your iPhone

1) Open the Settings app.

2) Tap General > About.

3) If you had your iPhone repaired, you will see a Parts and Service History section. It will show the part that was serviced and whether it’s a Genuine Apple Part or an Unknown Part.

For instance, it will say:

  • Display Genuine Apple Part or Unknown Part
  • Camera Genuine Apple Part or Unknown Part
  • Battery Genuine Apple Part or Unknown Part, and so on.

4) If your iPhone is/has connected to the Internet after repair, tap the Genuine Apple Part or Unknown Part field to get more information and see the date when it was repaired.

What you can check

The Parts and Service History shows the following replaced parts, as applicable:

  • Battery – For iPhone XR, XS, SE (2nd and 3rd gen) and later
  • Display – iPhone 11 and later
  • Rear system, TrueDepth front camera, and rear cameras – iPhone 12 and later

Note: Apple says that if your iPhone has a major issue that ‘affects the functionality of the device and needs attention to resolve,’ you may also see it listed under the Parts and Service History section.

What if your iPhone has an Unknown Part

The Unknown Part message can appear for several reasons, but the main ones are:

  • The part used for the repair is not a genuine Apple part.
  • The part used for repair was taken from another iPhone. However, this is about to change soon as Apple will now allow parts taken from another iPhone for repair purposes, provided the donor iPhone is not locked by Activation Lock.
  • The part calibration was not completed successfully. For instance, if you repair your iPhone yourself, you have to complete the calibration by contacting Apple.
  • The repaired part is not functioning as it should.

If your iPhone has an Unknown Part and you got it repaired from an Apple Store or authorized service center, then you must immediately contact them for a fix.

While having an Unknown Part may not restrict your iPhone usability, it can pose some challenges.

If the display is not genuine

  • There may be brightness issues
  • Colors may not appear sharp and consistent
  • True Tone may not work
  • The battery may deplete faster
  • The screen may not turn off when you’re on a phone call and hold the iPhone to your ear
  • You may have multi-touch issues on the entire screen or some parts of it. As a result, zooming in and out or dragging and dropping items may not be smooth

If the battery is not genuine

If the front and back cameras are not genuine

  • Face ID may not work
  • The final picture may not be sharp
  • Portrait mode may not work properly
  • Third-party apps that use the camera, like Instagram, WhatsApp, and more, may freeze and quit, or the camera may not work inside them, appearing just as a black screen

Don’t see the Parts and Service History section?

You won’t see this section in your iPhone Settings if:

  • The iPhone was never repaired
  • It’s an iPhone X or older model
  • It’s running an iOS version older than iOS 15.2
