This is the new iPhone 12/12 Mini (UPDATED)

Apple’s big iPhone event is up and running, and the company just made its first big announcement regarding its new handsets: the iPhone 12. As expected, the design looks very similar to the older iPhones 4 and 5, with rounded edges and glass front and back. Below we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the new smartphone.
Design
- It’s 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter than the iPhone 11. It also has smaller bezels.
- Aluminum frames with flat edges, sandwiched between two slates of glass covered by a new material from Corning: Ceramic Shield.
- Apple says Ceramic Shield is tougher than any smartphone glass—4x better drop performance
- Comes in 5 colors: black, white, green, red and blue
Display
- Under the Shield is a 6.1-inch ‘Super Retina XDR’ custom OLED display
- That display has a resolution of 2532 x 1170 with 2.8 million pixels, 460 ppi
- The display also offers 1200 nits HDR (x2 that of the iPhone 11) and supports Dolby Vision, HJLG and HDR 10 formats
Cellular
- iPhone 12 features custom antennas in the rails—Apple says it has the most 5G bands in a phone
- iOS has been optimized for 5G and includes a new ‘Smart Data’ mode that will automatically switch between 5G and LTE, depending on your current speed needs.
- Apple has done 5G testing with 100 carriers in 30 regions
Performance
- iPhone 12 features the new A14 bionic, which uses a 5nm process
- The A14 bionic has a 6 core CPU, 4 core GPU
- The CPU is 50% faster than any other smartphone chip
- It features over 11.8 billion transistors—40% more than the A13
Camera
- The iPhone 12 features a dual camera: an ultra wide lens with 120-degree field of view and a wide camera with f/1.6 aperture
- The 7-element lens on the wide offers 27% improvement in low light performance
- The camera also now offers Smart HDR 3
iPhone 12 mini
- Same design and features as the iPhone 12
- The mini has a 5.4-inch display
- Apple says it’s the lightest and smallest 5G phone in the world
