You’ve got your zippered pocket for stowing various valuables and a stretchy pocket to hold a water bottle up to three inches in diameter. This pocket keeps the bottle upright (prevents leak, easy to access) and retracts when unused.
In Waterfield’s trademark style, a gold-colored water-resistant liner creates a contrasting background so you can quickly locate things such as USB-C chargers, cables, docks, memory cards and the like.
Your tablet is protected in the main compartment, lined in fleece, and has a protective neoprene bottom strip. The leather flap on the outside is one huge pocket for holding quick-access items such as tickets, metro cards, iPhones, AirPods, etc.
The pleated compartment under the flap lies flat when empty, expanding when needed to provide extra storage. It includes a pair of organizational pockets along with a practical key hook.
As is customary for WaterField, this messenger bag is made from X-Pac, a marketing name for a type of laminated textile developed by Dimension-Polyant with water-repelling properties. The durable material keeps your iPad and other bag contents safe from sweat, water, and rain and is combined with canvas for a soft feel.
Pricing and availability
You can order the Shinjuku Messenger bag from the WaterField Designs website in three distinct color finishes, named Brown, Storm Grey and Black.
The compact version for the 11-inch iPad is priced at $229, while the full-size edition for the 12.9-inch iPad or a 15-inch MacBook Pro will run you $239.
The leather-wrapped handle on the full-size version slides over most carry-on suitcase handles such as on WaterField’s X-Air Duffel. Aside from X-Pac, WaterField also offers a rugged tan waxed canvas edition of the Shinjuku featuring distressed full-grain leather for that unmistakably cool old-school look.
