Apple has sold three billion iPhones since the original model debuted in 2007

In the past eighteen years, Apple has sold more than three billion iPhones. The first iPhone model was released in the United States on June 29, 2007.

“We also recently marked a significant milestone: We shipped the 3 billionth iPhone since its launch in 2007,” Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said during yesterday’s conference call discussing the company’s financial results for the June quarter, according to a transcript of the call shared by Six Colors.

The company’s head of marketing, Greg Joswiak, reiterated the milestone on X (Twitter). “Thank you to everyone who’s made iPhone such an important part of their lives,” he said. “I’m incredibly excited for what’s ahead!”

Apple has shipped 3 billion iPhones since 2007

Apple announced shipping its first billionth iPhone in 2016, so the company has managed to ship two billion iPhones since then. Note the distinction between the number of iPhones sold and actively used. For example, even though one billion iPhones were sold between 2007 and 2016, there were 900 million iPhones actively used three years later, in 2019.

However, Apple has not shared an updated stats for the installed base of active devices beyond a vague statement that “Our installed base of active devices also reached a new all-time high across all product categories and geographic segments, thanks to our very high levels of customer satisfaction and loyalty,” according to Kevan Parekh, Apple’s finance chief.

Apple beats expectations for the June quarter

Apple reported revenue of $94 billion, beating expectations, and net quarterly profit of $23.4 billion, or $1.57 per diluted share. These are better results compared with the same 3-month period in 2024, when the company reported $85.8 billion in revenue and net quarterly profit of $21.4 billion, or $1.40 per diluted share.

The Services business raked in $27.4 billion during the quarter, an all-time record for Services revenue, versus the $24.2 billion in Services revenue in the year-ago quarter.

iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 are Apple’s most popular developer betas so far

Cook also said that iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 file as Apple’s most popular developer betas so far. “It’s wonderful to see great momentum building for our platforms,” he said. “iOS 26, macOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are by far the most popular developer betas we’ve had.”

Apple also provides versions for public beta testing, but those betas are not available until July. Many non-developers install developer betas as soon as they become available in June, especially since Apple dropped the $99/year requirement for an Apple Developer Program membership to download developer betas.

iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 are Apple’s most popular developer betas

The iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 operating systems sporting a glassy design overhaul are Apple’s most popular developer betas so far.

Apple CEO Tim Cook shared this tidbit during a conference call with investors and analysts yesterday after the company posted results for the June quarter.

“It’s wonderful to see great momentum building for our platforms,” said Cook, per a transcript of the conference call shared by Six Colors. “iOS 26, macOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are by far the most popular developer betas we’ve had.”

Apple previews new features across its software platforms once per year in June, at a five-day event called the Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC. The first developer betas of software updates that will be released publicly in the fall are shared following the conclusion of the WWDC keynote on the first day of the event.

In the past, developers who wanted to access these betas had to pay a yearly fee of $99 for an Apple Developer Program membership. As of two years ago, developers can download betas even if they don’t pay this fee.

Versions for public beta testing are released in July, and this year was no exception. Anyone can install these betas to test new features before they’re widely available by signing up with their Apple account at the Apple Beta Software Program website. However, many non-developers who are eager to be among the first to test new features waste no time installing developer betas as soon as they’re available.

Cook also mentioned the glassy design overhaul that these operating systems bring to Apple devices, saying the new design is crafted from a material the company calls Liquid Glass. “It’s both beautiful and expressive, and for the first time ever, this design extends across all of our platforms,” he said.
