How to fix WhatsApp showing a blank screen on iPhone

Follow these troubleshooting tips to fix WhatsApp on your iPhone opening to a blank or white screen instead of showing you the conversation list.

A blank WhatsApp screen is a known issue that can occur due to bugs, problems with your internet connectivity, insufficient storage space, and other issues.

In this step-by-step troubleshooter, we’ll show you ways to identify the root cause of the problem and share fixes to resolve the issue so you can keep on chatting.

Start with the basic troubleshooting steps

    • Download the latest WhatsApp update from the App Store.
    • Try switching to a different Wi-Fi network, if available.
    • Restart your iPhone (make it a habit to do so every few days).
    • Delete the app and re-download it from the App Store.

The two-factor authentication screen may be stuck

With two-step verification turned on, WhatsApp will prompt you once a week to enter your six-digit code so you can continue using the app. WhatsApp may sometimes freeze or show a blank screen when bringing up the keypad to punch in your verification code. Force-quit and reopen the app once or twice may fix this problem, albeit only temporarily.

    Too many contacts?

If you have more than 1,000 entries in the built-in Contacts app, WhatsApp may open to a blank screen instead of your chat list. This can be especially problematic on older iPhone models with more constrained resources. Force-quitting the app should resolve the issue temporarily. Otherwise, try these tips:

WhatsApp allowed only limited access for iPhone Contacts

    Free up WhatsApp storage

If you’ve exchanged a large number of photos, videos, documents, and more, free up WhatsApp storage in WhatsApp Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage. Here, you can delete unneeded WhatsApp attachments. Or, select the Chats tab and delete entire conversations along with their media.

Manage storage option in WhatsApp on iPhone

    Make space on your iPhone

WhatsApp and other apps may crash if your iPhone doesn’t have at least one gigabyte of usable storage space. Back in the day, I used to see a blank screen often when opening WhatsApp on my 16 GB iPhone. To free up storage space, delete unneeded apps, videos, photos, and other unwanted data.

If you’re setting up WhatsApp on an old iPhone

WhatsApp requires iOS 15.1 and later. If you try using the app on an older iPhone model running iOS 15 or earlier, it won’t work, or you may see a blank screen when launching the app. If your iPhone is running a version of iOS newer than 15.1 but not the most recent version (iOS 18 or iOS 26), you may also encounter issues. Update to the latest version of iOS and see if that solves the problem.

Bubu98 shared a unique trick to fix the blank WhatsApp screen on older devices:

    1. Delete the app on your iPhone and reinstall it from the App Store.
    2. Launch WhatsApp, enter your mobile phone number, and complete setup.
    3. Skip restoring the chat archive from iCloud.
    4. Do not enter your name when prompted. Instead, open the Control Center and turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data.
    5. Return to WhatsApp, then enter your name, and continue.
    6. Return to the Control Center, and toggle on Wi-Fi and cellular data
    7. Finish the login process in WhatsApp.

    Reset network settings

Sometimes, WhatsApp issues are caused by your iPhone’s internet connection. In that case, resetting all network settings to factory defaults may fix the problem

    Delete and reinstall WhatsApp

If none of the above troubleshooting steps help, your only option is to wait for a future WhatsApp update that may fix the problem. If waiting isn’t an option, consider deleting or reinstalling the app, but first back up your WhatsApp chats to iCloud so that you can restore them later.

You can now buy some older Apple TV+ movies like “CODA” and “Greyhound”; Now offer them on Blu-ray, please!

Apple has made several older Apple TV+ original movies available to purchase or rent within the built-in TV app, including “CODA” and “Greyhound.”

Reddit forums indicate Apple has made some of its original movies available for purchase for the first time. The change has happened in the past two weeks, and the movies can be bought through the Store section in the built-in TV app.

Several older Apple Original movies are available to purchase or rent in 4K resolution, with more likely to come later. Unfortunately, none of the Apple TV+ shows such as “Slow Horses” or “Severance” are purchasable as of now.

Apple now lets you buy or rent older Apple TV+ movies

The Store section within the TV app lacks a search function, so you need to browse the listings manually to find these movies. But there’s an easier way. Simply type in the desired title in the TV app’s search field, then choose the movie from search results to land on its page. Now scroll down and you should see the new purchase ($15) and rental ($4) options in the “How to Watch” section.

As of this writing, you can purchase or rent the following movies in 4K HDR:

    • “CODA”
    • “On the Rocks”
    • “Greyhound”

“CODA” is a 2021 Sofia Coppola movie that follows Ruby, the only hearing member of her deaf family, as she balances her love for music with her responsibilities at home. This heartfelt coming-of-age drama blends humor and emotion while exploring themes of family, identity and following your dreams.

“On the Rocks” is Sian Heder’s Academy Award-winning 2021 comedy-drama about a young mother who teams up with her charismatic, playboy father to investigate her husband’s suspicious behavior. Set against the backdrop of New York City, it’s a witty and heartfelt exploration of marriage, trust and father-daughter bonds.

“Greyhound” was the first major Apple Original movie to debut exclusively on Apple TV+ after theaters shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered in July 2020 and quickly became one of the platform’s biggest early hits. Directed by Aaron Schneider, this flick stars Tom Hanks as a US Navy captain leading an Allied convoy through dangerous, U-boat-infested waters.

If you haven’t watched “Greyhound” yet, I highly recommend it. This tense World War II naval thriller is packed with relentless action and suspense, coupled with a gripping story of leadership, courage and survival at sea.

    A new distribution model

Hopefully, this starts a trend so that people who are not subscribed to Apple TV+ can enjoy some of the platform’s original movies. Besides, some people want to actually buy movies to own forever, as opposed to having the subscription model, where you have access to the whole library but don’t own anything.

Perhaps the company will offer some of the Apple Original movies available for sale on Blu-ray discs for those who want the best audio and video quality. Apple is wise to experiment with new distribution modes as it continues to build out a library of original movies and TV shows.

The streaming platform also offers a limited-time selection of older licensed movies from Hollywood majors to stream for free. These movies are only available for a month before they’re removed from the service, but Bloomberg said Apple was talking to Hollywood studios about licensing their films to add to the Apple TV+ catalog.

iTunes Store no longer sells movies

Apple used to sell movies in the iTunes Store app. But as of iOS 17.2, the app only offers music and ringtones. It has since displayed a message instructing users to buy or rent movies and TV shows through the TV app instead.

The message is displayed after selecting the Movies or TV Shows tab in the iTunes Store app, and includes two buttons to take the user to the Store section of the TV app or their purchases in the Library section in the sidebar
