How to run an Internet speed test on Apple TV

In this brief tutorial, we’ll walk you through the quick steps to check the download and upload speed of your Apple TV’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.

You may want to run a network speed test on your Apple TV if video, music, or live sports streaming lags, and Siri requests, app downloads, or tvOS software updates take a long time. In these situations, you can run a quick speed test to find the download or upload speed and then take steps to fix it.

Run Wi-Fi or Ethernet speed test on Apple TV

1) Open the tvOS App Store, search for speed test, and you’ll see a handful of free and paid apps. I recommend these three; download any one or all:

  • Speedtest by Ookla: This is one of the most popular speed test apps of all time. You may have already used it on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android phone, and other devices.

  • Internet Speed Test: It shows a handy graphic telling you if your Internet connection is good for SD (standard definition), HD (high definition), 4K, or 8K streaming.

  • SpeedTest: Saves your speed test results so you can have a history.

2) Open the downloaded speed test app and run it. If you’re using Speedtest by Ookla, you can also change your server location (but note that the default server selected automatically is usually the best choice).

3) After about 30 seconds, you should see the download and upload speeds and the ping of your Apple TV’s Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection.

Note that all three apps require you to open them to check the speed. I couldn’t find an app that shows the network speed in tvOS Control Center.
