Fix WhatsApp not working because it’s not updated

When you see a message in WhatsApp saying you can’t use the app because it’s not updated, then the obvious solution is to update it from the App Store. If you’re new to iPhone, we’ll quickly explain this and show you how to fix the issue.

App developers regularly push updates to ensure everything runs smoothly, add new features, fix known security bugs, and so forth.

Because of this, you must try to keep all your apps updated. Apple goes a step further by enabling automatic app updates out of the box by default. Still, automatic app updates, much like automatic iOS software updates, can take weeks to happen in the background. As a result, you may still be using an outdated version of an app, even though an update was made available a while back.

Secondly, you may wonder, why do some app developers, like WhatsApp, totally block you from using an old version of the app and force an update?

The answer is often security. Older versions may have serious vulnerabilities that could put your account at risk. Other major reasons to force users to update include server compatibility, maintaining feature consistency, bug fixes & performance stability, and policy compliance.

If you have not updated WhatsApp (or it was not updated automatically) for a long time on your main iPhone or one you use rarely, then follow these steps to fix it.

Update WhatsApp from the App Store

Open the outdated WhatsApp app, and if there is a link/button to the App Store, tap it to install the update. If it’s just a message popup, follow these steps instead.

  1. Touch and hold the App Store icon on your iPhone or iPad and choose Updates. You can also open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and then tap Updates.
  2. Pull down the Updates screen to refresh it.
  3. Go through the list of apps with pending updates, and tap the Update button next to WhatsApp.
  4. Finally, open WhatsApp, and it will work smoothly.

If you still can’t use WhatsApp

Do the following in case the “update” message still shows when you open WhatsApp on your iPhone or iPad:

  • Return to the App Store Updates screen, pull down the App Store Updates page once again to ensure there isn’t another pending update for WhatsApp. If there is, tap Update.
  • Force close and reopen WhatsApp a couple of times.
  • Restart your iPhone.
