Fix Precision Finding not working on iPhone

Go through these quick tips if you’re unable to pinpoint the exact location of your AirTag, AirPods case, or people who have shared their location with you.

Using Precision Finding

Before we move further, here’s a refresher on how to use Precision Finding:

1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone.
2. Select an AirTag, AirPods Pro (2 or 3), or a person with an iPhone 15 or newer who is sharing their location with you.
3. Tap Find and follow the instructions to locate your item or friend. Note that Find is replaced by Directions if you’re too far apart.

Precision Finding shows an arrow and instructions on the iPhone screen that point in the direction you should go to find the AirTag, AirPods, or the iPhone user. It also shows how far they are, so you can get an estimate and walk accordingly.

Usually, this process works reliably. But in some cases, your iPhone may not be able to establish a connection with the AirTag or AirPods. Other times, you’ll see a weak signal message on the screen even when you know you’re close to the AirTag. And rarely, the buttons (speaker, flashlight, message, and close X) on the Precision Finding screen may not be tappable.

Here are some quick tips to address these issues.

The basics

• Try walking to the room or area where you think the misplaced item may be. Your iPhone can connect with the missing AirTag, AirPods case, or a person’s iPhone once you’re within about 30 to 50 feet of it.
• Go to iPhone Settings (not Control Center) and turn off Bluetooth. Then wait 10 seconds and turn Bluetooth back on.
• Toggle Airplane mode on and off from iOS Control Center or the Settings app.
• Force quit and reopen the Find My app.
• Restart your iPhone.
• Make sure your AirTag’s battery is not low.

Check location settings

Precision Finding works even when location services are turned off entirely on your iPhone. Still, for the best Find My app experience, head to iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure it’s on. Then, tap Find My, and turn on Precise Location.

Restart the other device

If Precision Finding still fails even after restarting your iPhone, restart the other device. Of course, you’ll be able to do this only after you find the item some other way.

• AirTags: Take out the battery and insert it again.

• AirPods: Keep both AirPods in the case and leave them for a few minutes. Plug the case into a charger if its battery is low.
• iPhone: Restart the other phone to ensure Precision Finding works reliably.

Update everything

Update the iPhone, AirPods, and AirTag in question if they are not on the latest software or firmware version.

Reset iPhone settings

In case you still can’t use Precising Finding, go to iOS Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone and reset all settings. This won’t delete apps, photos, videos, or other personal data, but it will factory reset all the settings.

Reset to factory settings

Lastly, if nothing works, consider factory resetting your AirTags or AirPods Pro. After that, set them up again, and tracking should work fine now.

Precision Finding works on these devices

Apple’s U1 or U2 Ultra Wideband chip enables Precision Finding for spatial awareness, allowing devices to determine their relative positions.

The Ultra Wideband chip is available on these devices.

U1 chip (first generation):

• iPhone 11 up to iPhone 14
• iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generations)
• iPhone 16e
• iPhone 17e
• AirTag (1st generation)
• MagSafe Charging Case of AirPods Pro (2nd generation)
• Apple Watch Series 6, 7, and 8
• Apple Watch Ultra

U2 chip (second generation):

• iPhone 15 and newer
• iPhone Air
• AirTag (1st generation)
• MagSafe Charging Case of AirPods Pro (3rd generation)
• Apple Watch Series 9 and later
• Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later

Note:

• Using Precision Finding to locate people is only available on iPhones with the U2 chip.
• If you’re in Japan, newer iPhones with the U2 chip will have U1 chip performance due to the unavailability of some Ultra Wideband frequencies.

Precision Finding isn’t available in all countries

You can’t use Precision Finding if you’re from these countries:

• Armenia
• Azerbaijan
• Belarus
• Kazakhstan
• Kyrgyzstan
• Russia
• Tajikistan
• Turkmenistan
• Ukraine
• Uzbekistan

And if you’re in Indonesia or Nepal, you can use Precision Finding only on these newer devices:

• iPhone 17 models
• iPhone Air
• Apple Watch Series 11
• Apple Watch Ultra 3
• AirTag (2nd generation)
• MagSafe Charging Case for AirPods Pro 3
