How to set your WhatsApp username on iPhone and Android

In this step-by-step tutorial, we show you how to reserve your unique username on WhatsApp, edit it if you change your mind, and also block people from messaging you even if they have your username.

WhatsApp has started rolling out the usernames feature, which is in line with Telegram and other social media platforms.

After you set up your WhatsApp username, you can share it with a person, and they can text you, all without you having to share your mobile number with them. But note that, as of writing, WhatsApp only lets you reserve your username; features like messaging via username will be introduced later.

Note: WhatsApp doesn’t force you to reserve a username; you can choose to skip it.

Which username you can set

You have three choices when you go to set a WhatsApp username (steps below):

Create a unique username
Use your Instagram username as your WhatsApp username
Use your Facebook username as your WhatsApp username

Note: Some people (especially journalists and whistleblowers) are very vocal on X about not linking their WhatsApp account to their Instagram or Facebook accounts to protect their privacy.

Which username you should set

If you’re a very private person like me, I suggest creating a super random username, like ja56794mes, instead of james_smith. Or, you can create a simple username (like james_smith) and then secure it with a key (mentioned below).

If you’re a social person, you can just use the same Instagram or Facebook username as your WhatsApp username.

Can someone impersonate you using your Instagram and Facebook usernames?

WhatsApp has carefully considered the implications before rolling out this username feature.

So, imagine your Instagram or Facebook username is iDownloadBlog, and someone else tries to act fast and snap it up for their WhatsApp account.

They won’t be able to do that because setting iDownloadBlog as their WhatsApp username will require them to log in to the iDownloadBlog Instagram or Facebook account, which they can’t do if you haven’t shared your login details with them.

Even if you don’t use your Instagram or Facebook username as your WhatsApp username and create a new WhatsApp username, your Instagram and Facebook usernames will remain blocked for others.

What about impersonation via other social media usernames?

Since the same parent company (Meta) owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, they have been able to link all three and prevent username impersonation. However, this doesn’t apply to other social platforms like X (Twitter) or TikTok.

Somebody else can certainly use your X or other social media username as their WhatsApp username, provided it’s available and they act before you.

So, if you want your WhatsApp username to match your other (non-Meta) social media platforms, reserve it quickly before others do.

Of course, I assume WhatsApp has some usernames reserved for super famous people, and you won’t be able to grab any of them.

Reserve your WhatsApp username on iPhone or Android

1) Update WhatsApp to the latest version from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.

2) Open WhatsApp on your iPhone or Android phone and tap ‘Reserve yours‘ in the ‘Usernames are coming soon‘ banner if you see it.

If you don’t see the above banner, open WhatsApp on your iPhone and tap You > Account.

If you’re on an Android phone, open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot icon at the top, and select Settings > Account.

3) Tap the new Username option.

4) Now, choose to create a new username or use your Instagram or Facebook username:

If you want to use the same username as your Instagram or Facebook account, tap those buttons, link your Instagram/Facebook account to WhatsApp, and the username will be pre-filled. Just confirm, and you’re good to go.
If you choose to create a username, search for your preferred username and, if it’s available, tap Save. Otherwise, try other usernames.

Set up a username key to add a second layer of privacy

After you reserve a username, you can choose how people contact you by username.

Your options are to let everyone who has your WhatsApp username (or who has guessed or mistyped) to text you.

The other option is more privacy-focused. It lets you set up a four-digit username key to add a barricade. Thereafter, even if someone has your WhatsApp username, they won’t be able to message you until you also share your four-digit key with them.

You can, of course, change these privacy settings later.

Edit or delete your username

You can change or delete your WhatsApp username. Just return to WhatsApp account settings > Username and tap the Edit button at the top. Then, tap Change Username or Delete Username.

If you don’t get the option to set up a username

WhatsApp is adding this feature gradually. So, wait and keep returning to WhatsApp Account settings regularly. You should get it soon.

Secondly, make sure you update the WhatsApp app on your iPhone and Android phone. Even if you installed an update recently, check the App Store or Google Play Store for a new one. Sometimes, you may even see a new update immediately after installing one.

Will spam texts increase via username?

It may. If you have a simple username like James, people can just message you like they can on every other social platform.

But just like other platforms allow you to make your account private or block incoming messages, WhatsApp gives you the unique ‘username key’ feature that blocks others from messaging you if they don’t have your four-digit key, even though they have your username (already explained above).

How to undo or redo Home Screen changes in iPadOS 27

iPadOS 27 adds easily accessible buttons to revert (undo) or continue (redo) a change made to your iPad Home Screen.

This simple but handy option not only allows you to course-correct any change, but also lets you see how the Home Screen looks, and if you don’t like it, you can go back to the earlier look. For instance, after you switch to black app icons, you can exit the customization pane to view your entire Home Screen, and in case you don’t like it, you can undo the change.

The undo and redo buttons let you revert most, but not all, changes. For instance, in my tests, I found that I cannot switch to the previous wallpaper style after editing it. Similarly, undo and redo don’t always function as expected when working with Home Screen widgets.

But the undo and redo buttons seem to work well for other basic changes like editing Home Screen app icons, moving apps and widgets, and hiding & showing Home Screen pages.

Undo or redo Home Screen changes on iPad

1) Update your iPad to iPadOS 27 (currently in beta).

2) Touch and hold anywhere on the Home Screen until all apps start jiggling.

3) Tap the paintbrush icon in the top left corner and select an option like Customize.

4) Make some changes, and then you can exit the customization pane.

5) Touch and hold the Home Screen again, and the undo icon (shown with a left curved arrow) should be active. Tap it to revert the change.

And then tap the redo icon (the right curved arrow) to restore it to how it was.

Undo or redo Home Screen changes on iPhone

Given the small screen area at the top due to the Face ID notch, iOS 27 doesn’t have proper undo and redo buttons like iPadOS 27.

That said, you can physically shake your iPhone left and right to undo a Home Screen customization. But note that it won’t work for all changes.

In case shaking your iPhone doesn’t show an undo alert, go to iPhone Settings > Accessibility > Touch and make sure Shake to Undo is enabled.
