TikTok has launched Family Pairing, a new set of parental controls that enable parents to monitor both the consumption and uploading of videos by teens.

Parents or legal guardians will receive a notification whenever their teen (ages 16-17) uploads a video, story or photo that’s visible freely to others on the platform.

“This helps parents stay informed and start open conversations about what their teen is posting, without disrupting a teen’s creativity or independence,” TikTok says.

Parents can also check if their teen has enabled downloads for their content, which allows other TikTok users to save videos to their device.

Furthermore, parents or legal guardians will be notified if their teen has made their following list visible to others, or if others can Duet or Stitch with what they post. Additionally, parents can see which topics the teen has turned on in their feed. TikTok says these features are permanently off for teens 13-15 by default and can’t be changed.

Parents can now block specific accounts to prevent their teen from following them. A blocked account cannot interact with the teen; its content vanishes from the teen’s feed, and the profile becomes unavailable to view.

“If things change, teens can send their parents a request to unblock the account, but parents make the final decision,” noted TikTok. The feature will initially hit Europe.

If you rely on Apple’s Family Sharing feature and Apple’s Screen Time parental controls to prevent kids from downloading apps like TikTok, you should be aware that there’s a workaround that your junior probably knows about.

New creator tools and community notes

The new Family Pairing tools were announced today alongside new creator tools to block offensive video comments, bulk mute words, phrases and emojis during live broadcast, the ability to check whether a video is likely to be ineligible for the For You feed, a new creator chat room feature and more.

Last but not least, TikTok has introduced the Footnotes fact-checking feature akin to X’s Community Notes. Initially available in the United States only, the feature relies on the collective knowledge of the TikTok community to prevent misinformation, lies and conspiracy theories from spreading on the platform.

TikTok users enrolled in the Footnotes pilot can write and rate footnotes on short videos. When enough Footnotes contributors mark a community note as helpful, it becomes publicly visible on the platform.

When Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 lineup arrives this fall, expect a $50 price hike across the board, according to a new analyst note.

Jefferies analyst Edison Lee wrote in an investor note seen by MacRumors that all models in the iPhone 17 lineup will cost an extra $50 in the United States when the new models launch in September compared to the last year’s iPhone 16 models, which are priced at $800 for the base 128GB iPhone 16 and go all the way up to $1600 for the top-of-the-line 1TB iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Apple may implement the price hike across all models in the iPhone 17 lineup—including the regular iPhone 17, an all-new iPhone 17 Air model replacing the iPhone 17 Plus model), the iPhone 17 Pro and the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max—to address rising component costs and China tariffs instead of taking a hit to its margins.

iPhone 17 lineup might cost $50 more

Price increases are likely to be even higher internationally, as iPhone prices in other countries are higher when converted into US dollars.

The Wall Street Journal reported in May that Apple considered jacking up prices across the iPhone 17 lineup to cancel out the impact of Trump’s tariffs without blaming the Trump administration or revealing the true reason in order to avoid political confrontation.

“Apple is weighing price increases for its fall iPhone lineup, a step it is seeking to couple with new features and design changes,” the newspaper reported. People familiar with Apple’s supply chain said the company “would have trouble making up for China tariff costs solely by seeking further savings from its suppliers, meaning a hit to its profit margin was likely unless it could raise prices.”
