No base iPhone 18 for you in 2026! Instead, premium models will drop in the fall of that year while the standard iPhone 18 is said to slip to spring 2027, rumor has it.

ETNews has reportedly confirmed with its supply chain sources earlier rumors about a major shift in Apple’s iPhone rollout strategy where the standard iPhone 18 model is not expected to debut in fall 2026 alongside its peers. If true, that will mark a signidficant departure from Apple’s traditional single-event reveal for new iPhones.

Meanwhile, this year’s iPhone 17 lineup remains on track for a traditional September 2025 launch, with the revamped iPhone 17e allegedly debuting at a spring 2026 event. However, only the premium iPhone 18 models are expected to launch at a fall 2026 event while the standard iPhone 18 (and the iPhone 18e) should come six months later in the spring of 2027. And in September 2027, iPhone fans should be treated to a big reveal as Apple introduces its 20th anniversary iPhone.

iPhone 18 is expected to be bumped into early 2027

If this is true and you were hoping to buy a base iPhone 18 instead of the more expensive premium models, you’d need to wait about six months. Apple reportedly already told its manufacturing partners and suppliers about this change.

This isn’t entirely new; Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first said a few months ago that Apple would break tradition and make changes to the iPhone release schedule in order to better compete with Android vendors. The company apparently plans to introduce non-Pro models like the base iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e in the spring, with the premium devices coming in the usual September timeframe.

In other words, the biannual release cadence will bring the iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the much-anticipated foldable iPhone in the fall of 2026. The main factor appears to be the arrival of Apple’s first foldable iPhone in 2026, which demands additional resources and attention, but it’s not just about that.

Android vendors introduce new devices more than once per year. Therefore, staggering releases will enable Apple to spotlight its premium offerings in the fall, with an additional spring launch helping maintain the momentum are renew interest when attention fades after the fall event.

The built-in Mail app on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac shows profile icons or Apple-assigned images if the sender hasn’t added their own contact photo. While they look nice, these images take up valuable space, so you see fewer messages at once.

Apple’s generic placeholders, such as bland buildings or generic storefronts, can be particularly distracting and spoil the clean look of your inbox. Fortunately, you can turn off contact photos in Mail to free up space and view more email messages at a glance without scrolling, and here are three ways to do this.

Method 1: Turn off ‘Show Contact Photos’ in Apple Mail

1. Open the built-in Mail app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Go to the All Inboxes view.
3. Hit the three-dotted icon in the top-right corner and untick the Show Contact Photos option. You can do so from both Categories and List views to turn off profile images in either view.

Method 2: Turn off contact photos in the Settings app

You can also toggle contact photos in the Mail settings.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Apps, then choose Mail in the list of apps.
3. Turn off the switch for Show Contact Photos.

Return to your inbox in the Mail app and contact photos wil be hidden.

Method 3: Increase text size for the Mail app to hide profile images

You can also change per-app text size, which will force the Mail app to adapt by hiding contract photos in the inbox.

1. Edit the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad to add the Text Size control.
2. Open the Mail app and swipe down from the top-right corner to open the Control Center.
3. Touch and hold the Text Size control, choose Mail Only, and increase text size to at least 160%.

Hide contact photos in Apple Mail for Mac

The Mac has much more screen space than your iPhone. Nevertheless, you can declutter your inbox by hiding senders’ contact photos, creating more room for emails. To do so, click the View menu and untick the Show Contact Photo option.

Bonus tip: Set custom profile images for favorite senders

If you actually prefer contact photos in the Mail list, but not Apple’s generic images for senders without a profile photo, save the sender as a contact and assign it a custom photo or emoji. Now the Mail app will show that profile image for all emails from that particular sender instead of Apple’s bland icon.

The methods above remove contact photos from the inbox list, but they still appear when you open the message. Unfortunately, Mail doesn’t let you remove senders’ contact photos from email views.
