How to turn off AirPods charging case sounds

In this quick tutorial, we’ll tell you about AirPods charging case sounds and how to turn them off if you don’t like them.

Which AirPods charging case has an external speaker

    • AirPods 4 with ANC
    • AirPods Pro 2 (both Lightning and USB-C models)
    • AirPods Pro 3

The charging case of the first three generations of regular AirPods, AirPods 4 without noise cancellation, and the first-generation AirPods Pro don’t have built-in speakers.

When the AirPods charging case plays a sound

This happens in the following conditions:

    • When you put the AirPods case into wired or wireless charging
    • When the charging case battery is very low
    • When you willingly play a sound using Find My
    • It can also play sounds when you’re resetting it or setting it up
    • And finally, AirPods kept in the case can play a chime to ensure microphones and speakers are working properly for the hearing health feature

Several AirPods Pro 2 complained of hearing a mysterious chime at odd times, like in the middle of the night. Apple confirmed that this is on purpose:

To help ensure that your AirPods microphones and speakers are operating at their best (for example, to help provide high-quality hearing test results), your AirPods may periodically play a quiet chime when in their charging case.

Turn off the AirPods charging case sounds

While the volume intensity of charging sounds on the AirPods case is very low, if you don’t like it for some reason, here are the quick steps to turn them off:

    1. Connect your AirPods to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
    2. Open iOS Settings or macOS System Settings and select your AirPods.
    3. Turn off the switch for Enable Charging Case Sounds.

Moving forward, your AirPods charging case won’t play a sound when you plug it into a charger or when its battery falls low. But it will still play a tone in other situations, such as when you use the Find My app to locate it.

In case the “Enable Charging Case Sounds” option is grayed out and you can turn it off, try the following solutions to fix that:

    • Quit and reopen the Settings app
    • Disconnect and pair AirPods again to your iPhone
    • Restart your iPhone
    • Put AirPods in their case for 15 seconds, close the lid, and try again

What to do if you still hear AirPods charging case sounds?

In case you still get AirPods charging case sounds after turning off the feature, it could be because of bugs or glitches.

Start by ensuring your AirPods are running the latest firmware version.

If that doesn’t help, factory reset your AirPods and set them up again. After setup, charging case sounds will be enabled by default, so turn the feature off.

And lastly, if nothing helps, take your AirPods to an Apple Store and get them checked.
