How to use new expressive Siri voice in iOS and macOS 27

In this tutorial, we show you how to adjust the pace and expressiveness of the Siri voice on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac running iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate.

Apple has focused heavily on adding several AI features to this year’s software update, and expressive Siri voices are one of them.

It lets you adjust how animated, emotional, excited, or natural Siri’s responses sound. For example, when the expressivity level is all the way down, Siri’s voice sounds close to robotic. But if you turn it all the way up, Siri may sound more natural. Let me explain with an example.

I set Siri’s voice expressivity all the way down and said, “I just want to let you know that I came first in my class test.” Siri replied with a congratulations message, but the voice lacked a sense of excitement; it sounded flat. When I repeated this with expressivity set to the maximum, I could hear enthusiasm in the voice.

Instead of taking my word for it, try it yourself if you have a recent Apple device.

Compatible devices

The new expressive Siri is powered by what Apple calls its ‘most advanced on-device model,’ available only on select models with at least 12 GB of memory. Here’s the complete list of devices where you can change the expressiveness of Siri voice and use the new and improved dictation feature:

• iPhone 17 Pro
• iPhone 17 Pro Max
• iPhone Air
• iPhone 18 Pro
• iPhone 18 Pro Max
• iPhone Duo
• iPad with M4 or newer chip with at least 12 GB RAM
• Mac with M3 or newer chip with at least 12 GB RAM
• Apple Vision Pro with the M5 chip (not the M2 chip version)

As you can see, even last year’s incredible iPhone 17 isn’t supported, as it has only 8 GB of RAM compared to 12 GB on the models mentioned above!

Make Siri more expressive in iOS and macOS 27

1) Update your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Vision Pro to the latest version of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, or visionOS 27.

2) Set up the new Siri AI by going to device settings. You may have to join a waitlist.

3) Open the Settings app or System Settings and select Siri.

4) Go to the Voice option.

5) Adjust the following features. You’ll hear Siri speak so you can decide which is the right level for you without guessing:

• Accent: Select from American, Australian, British, Indian, Irish, or South African.
• Voice: Pick a preferred voice, shown with green, yellow, orange, red, purple, and blue dots (earlier Apple used male and female names for Siri voices).
• Pace: This decides how fast or slow Siri speaks. It’s not a new feature, and even if your device doesn’t support the new Siri AI, you can adjust it by going to Settings > Accessibility > Siri > Speaking Rate.
• Expressivity: This is the truly new option. Drag its slider to fine-tune Siri’s voice just the way you like. Pushing it to the right increases the expressivity level.

Once you are done, go back to the previous settings pane or exit the app.

Moving forward, when you use Siri (not Type to Siri), Siri will speak the response, and you should hear its new voice.

If your device doesn’t support the new Siri, or you have chosen not to enable the new Siri AI, you’ll only have options to select your preferred Accent (called Variations) and Voice (1 to 5), as shown in the screenshots below.
