How to move iCloud Drive files on Mac without warning

In this brief tutorial, we show you two easy ways to move files from iCloud Drive to other Mac folders without a confirmation popup warning blocking the process.

When you try to drag a file out of the iCloud Drive folder to another Finder folder, you’ll see a dialog box saying, “Are you sure you want to remove “file” from iCloud Drive? This item will be moved to this Mac and will no longer be available in iCloud Drive on any of your devices.

Since iCloud Drive files are saved online on Apple’s servers and sync to all your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, web, and Windows PC, this confirmation popup adds a bit of friction to ensure you know what you’re doing, and not get worried when you don’t find the same file on your other devices.

However, this second confirmation input can slow down things when you already know what you’re doing. This is especially true for Mac users like me who have chosen to store their Documents and Desktop folders in iCloud Drive. And moving files from these popular folders requires attending to a popup.

Thankfully, macOS offers an easy way to change this behavior.

Move iCloud Drive files on Mac without confirmation

  1. Open Finder and go to iCloud Drive.
  2. Open a second local Finder folder, such as Downloads.
  3. Select a file in the iCloud Drive window, drag it out from there, and try dropping it in the local folder.
  4. You’ll see a confirmation popup. Check the box for “Do not ask again” and click Move. Going forward, you can drag files out of iCloud Drive in one swift motion.

In case your Mac is not running the latest version of macOS Tahoe, or you don’t see the “Do not ask again” option, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open Finder and click Finder > Settings from the top menu bar.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab.
  3. Uncheck the box for “Show warning before removing from iCloud Drive” and close this settings window.

You won’t see the iCloud Drive confirmation window anymore. But in the rare case you still do, just relaunch Finder to refresh it or restart your Mac.

Tip: Hold the Option key when dragging and dropping the file from iCloud Drive (or any other Mac folder) to copy it instead of moving. And since you’re not moving the file, you won’t see any warning popups.
