How to locate friends and family in crowded places using iPhone

Learn how to find your family members or friends in concerts, malls, markets, stadiums, and other crowded places using the Precision Finding feature baked into the Find My app on each other’s iPhones.

Precision Finding is what you use to locate your AirTags or AirPods charging case around you. It works using Apple’s U1 or U2 Ultra Wideband chip for spatial awareness.

Just like AirTags, when you use Precision Finding to locate your friends and family, it shows you how far they are and the direction to move in to reach them.

It can be a great way to locate your family members, friends, or kids (provided they are carrying an iPhone) in crowded public places like food courts, sports stadiums, and more.

Note that Precision Finding works without Wi-Fi or cellular data, making it ideal for situations where you may not be able to call to ask them where they are (but it won’t work if Airplane mode is turned on or Bluetooth is turned off).

Another important thing to remember is that the range is limited to about 196 feet (60 meters). For longer distances, you’ll have to see the map in the Find My app to know their whereabouts.

Supported devices

Precision Finding to locate your nearby family members and friends only works on devices with the U2 chip. Both parties should have one of these iPhone models:

  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, or 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, or 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 17, 17 Pro, or 17 Pro Max
  • iPhone Air

Note that Precision Finding isn’t available in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. And in Japan, the second-generation U2 chip has the performance of the first-generation U1 chip, because of which you may not be able to locate people using Precision Finding.

Use iPhone Precision Finding to locate people

1) Make sure your family member or friend is already sharing their location with you. We have a separate tutorial explaining a couple of easy ways to do that.

2) Open the Find My app on your iPhone.

3) Go to the People tab and select the person whom you want to locate.

4) Tap the Find button (this will only appear if the person is not very far away and in the ~196 feet/60 meter range).

5) You’ll now see how far you are from this person. In case the person is in range but your iPhone is unable to establish a good connection, it will ask you to move to a different location.

Once connected, you’ll see arrows and written instructions asking you which way to walk to find them.

Make it easier for the person to find you

When a person tries to find you using Precision Finding, an alert appears on the screen saying “Person is trying to find you. Open Find My to see where the person is.” Tapping this alert can improve the signal and range. And if both of you share your location with one another, this can help both walk towards each other, making the entire process easier and faster.

If the “Find” button is grayed out and unavailable in the iPhone Find My app

When the person you’re trying to find is more than a couple of hundred feet away, the Find button is replaced with Directions, which, when tapped, opens the Maps app. This is your clue that the person is outside of the Precision Finding range.

However, if the Find button is grayed out and says ‘Unavailable,’ that means the person is nearby, but their iPhone does not support Precision Finding. This means they have an iPhone 14, 13, 12, or 11 (all of which have the U1 chip).

And in case they have an iPhone XS, XR, X, or older, the Find option will never appear for them, as these phones don’t even have the first-generation U1 Ultra Wideband chip.

The unavailability of the Find button may also indicate a glitch, which you can solve by restarting either or both iPhones. In case you face this issue frequently, update to the latest version of iOS.
