How to add time limit to specific websites on iPhone, iPad, Mac

In this quick step-by-step tutorial, we show you how to set a daily time limit for unproductive websites that you or your child visit a lot on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

If your child spends a lot of time playing mobile games, browsing Instagram, or watching Netflix, you can set up a daily time limit for those apps.

In case your kid does the same with some websites, like social media, you can lock those sites behind a daily time limit too. After the assigned time period, that particular website won’t be accessible until midnight (when the limit resets).

Setting time limits for websites makes sense when you don’t want to block them entirely (like you might with adult sites on a child’s device) but instead want to encourage balanced daily usage.

Set a daily time limit for unproductive websites on iPhone, iPad, or Mac

1) Open the iOS Settings app on your child’s iPhone or iPad or System Settings on their Mac and then select Screen Time. We’re using an iPhone to demo the process.

If your child is added to your Apple digital family, you can follow these steps on your device and then select your child’s name under the Family section.

2) Make sure Screen Time passcode is set up. When it is, you’ll see “Change Screen Time Passcode” instead of “Lock Screen Time Settings.”

3) Tap App Limits, followed by Add Limit. Then, enter the Screen Time passcode if asked.

4) Scroll past the app categories and tap Websites from the bottom. You may see some recently accessed websites here. If they are the ones you want to put a limit on, select one or more and tap Next. If the site isn’t listed, tap Add Website, enter the website URL (like samsung.com), then tap Next.

5) Use the hour and minute sliders to set a time limit. You can also tap Customize Days to set a custom daily limit for some days. Then, make sure Block at End of Limit is enabled, and tap the checkmark icon.

6) Finally, I will advise force-closing all open apps (Settings, Safari, Chrome, etc.) or restarting the device. Without force-closing and restarting, the new limits may not come into effect immediately.

The website is now time-restricted. Once your child has spent that many hours or minutes on the website, it will be blocked for the rest of the day. The child can tap Ask For More Time and use the website for one more minute. But if they want to use it beyond that grace period, they will have to ask for your approval (which you can permit or deny) or enter the Screen Time passcode, which I hope you haven’t shared with them.

If you set the limit on your child’s iPhone or iPad, that website is blocked not only in Apple’s Safari browser, but also in Google Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers, including in-app browsers (like the one in the X app).

However, on Mac, the website is blocked only in Safari. The same time-restricted website can be accessed in Chrome, Firefox, etc.

Change the website time limit or remove it

You can increase or decrease the daily time limit for the website or delete it altogether.

  1. Return to Screen Time settings and tap App Limits.
  2. Tap the added website limit and enter the Screen Time passcode.
  3. Use the Time field to change it. Turn off Block at End of Limit to keep the daily limit, without restricting access once the limit is over. Or, tap Delete Limit to remove it altogether.
