Apple Watch Series 10 has a speaker issue which degrades sound quality over time
Some Apple Watch Series 10 owners are experiencing an issue with the onboard speaker, with the audio becoming quiet or muffled over time.
Apple Support Community and Reddit are filled with complaints from affected owners about the speaker issue, with one poster saying, “Has anyone noticed that the speaker volume is really low, it’s almost impossible to hear calls?”
All audio from the speaker is affected, including podcasts, music, notifications and even the charging chime, not just calls. Turning the Digital Crown to increase volume doesn’t seem to work for those affected. It’s unclear how widespread the issue is, whether this is a manufacturing defect or if it’s solvable in software.
Apple Watch Series 10 has a speaker issue
The fact that the audio gradually becomes quieter and muffled cloud suggest that some Apple Watch Series 10 units might have a speaker defect. Some folks say their Apple Watch volume is loud enough but crackles and is distorted. For others, sound quality began degrading after just the first couple of weeks of use.
If enough people complain about the problem and Apple acknowledges it, the company could announce a replacement program for watches with a speaker issue. In that case, replacements should be free, as the smartwatch was released in September 2024 and is still under the one-year manufacturer warranty.
Apple is probably aware of this because one owner claims the company has agreed to trade in their Series 10 after being brought to an Apple store for repair. However, the poster reported the same problem with their replacement unit.
The built-in Water Lock feature doesn’t help fix the low-volume problem. You can access Water Lock from the Control Center to clear water from the speaker after swimming or submerging the device in water. If this proves to be a software issue (we certainly hope so), Apple can fix it with a future update to watchOS.
