Apple’s stores are rumored to stop selling AppleCare+ coverage plans as a one-time purchase and instead offer them as a subscription.

AppleCare+ for MacBook Pro

On his X account, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote that AppleCare+ will still be available as an upfront purchase but only through the company’s online store. Apple’s brick-and-mortar locations in the United States will stop offering AppleCare+ plans as a one-time purchase as early as next week.

“A notable change coming to AppleCare+ next week: Apple is dropping the 2-3 year pay in advance option at physical retail stores and on devices and will only offer monthly and annual subscriptions,” reads the post. “You’ll still be able to get those multi-year plans on the online store.”

Rumor: Apple’s retail stores to stop offering AppleCare+ as an upfront purchase

AppleCare+ for many Apple products is available as an upfront purchase or a month-to-month option. I always buy my AppleCare+ insurance as a subscription because I want the flexibility of stopping paying for It at any time.

AppleCare+ can be purchased at the time of device purchase or for a limited amount of time, which varies from one market to another (typically 30-60 days). If you already paid upfront for an AppleCare+ plan, you can purchase new coverage within 45 days after your original coverage ends, according to Apple’s support page about extending AppleCare+ coverage.

You can extend expired AppleCare+ coverage by 24 months, 36 months, monthly or annually until canceled. You can renew AppleCare‌+ plans for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Vision Pro paid upfront as a monthly subscription or yearly payment, but expired AppleCare+ for Mac plans can only be renewed yearly.

On the downside, AppleCare+ subscriptions cost more over a 12-month period than yearly plans paid in advance, and they are non-transferable.
