Rumor: Apple suspends work on Vision Pro 2 to focus on a cheaper version (UPDATED)

Apple’s Vision Pro will get a cheaper version in 2025, but the company has reportedly suspended work on the second-generation model.

That’s according to The Information, which apparently learned about this from an employee at a manufacturer that makes key components for the Vision Pro headset.

“The company is still working on releasing a more affordable Vision product with fewer features before the end of 2025, the person involved in its supply chain and a person involved in the manufacturing of the headset said,” reads the article.

Take the information with a grain of salt because no other sources have corroborated the report. Besides, the article states that Apple may easily resume production in the future, indicating The Information isn’t so sure about this tip.

What compromises will a cheaper Vision Pro make?

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted two new Apple headsets by 2025. One should be a high-end model and the other a low-end version based on cheaper materials and featuring fewer external cameras and sensors and no front EyeSight display to show a user’s digital eyes to the outside world.

One feature a cheaper model isn’t expected to compromise on is its dual-OLED display providing more than 4K resolution per eye. According to MacRumors, a cheaper Vision Pro will have the same high-end displays as the Vision Pro.

However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman cautioned that Apple’s roadmap “doesn’t currently call for a second-generation model until the end of 2026.” Sophisticated technology that powers the headset requires state-of-the-art components. “Apple is still flummoxed by how exactly to bring down the cost, I’m told,” Gurman wrote.

“Cheap” by Apple’s standards means $1500-$2500

Even a cheaper Vision Pro might end up costing anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500. According to Gurman, Apple’s executive team have internally discussed pricing a budget Vision Pro between $1,500 and $2,500.

Mark Gurman reported on Bloomberg such a device might drop its EyeSight external display that shows a user’s digital eyes to the outside world to reduce isolation. A “budget” Vision Pro might use fewer external cameras and sensors, as per Gurman.
