Apple previewed its latest macOS Sequoia operating system featuring Apple Intelligence and other improvements during the WWDC24 keynote. The software update will be released for public consumption in the fall.

The device compatibility list for macOS Sequoia doesn’t differ much from macOS Sonoma, the previous version released in 2023, with one noteworthy exception.

macOS Sequoia system requirements: Mac device compatibility list

You now need an Apple silicon MacBook Air as macOS Sequoia drops support for the 2018 and 2019 MacBook Air models equipped with dual-core chips. The first MacBook Air powered by Apple silicon is the M1 model manufactured in 2020.

iOS 18 device compatibility list:

  • iMac Pro (2017 and later)
  • iMac (2019 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2019 and later)
  • Mac Studio (2022 and later)
  • MacBook Air (2020 and later)
  • Mac mini (2018 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (2018 and later)

The only Intel-based Macs that Sequoia supports are the 2018 and later MacBook Pros. Intel-based MacBook Pros manufactured in 2018, 2019 and 2020 are equipped with a six-core Intel chip, with later models running Apple silicon.

Apple Intelligence system requirements

Apple Intelligence is an umbrella term for generative AI features available across the iPhone, iPad and Mac with iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia.
To use Apple Intelligence, you must have an iPhone 15 Pro or later or any iPad or Mac powered by an Apple silicon Mac chip like the M1 or later.

macOS Sequoia is arriving this fall

Apple will be testing macOS Sequoia with members of the Apple Developer Program at developer.apple.com/programs. The general public can take the software for a spin when the macOS Sequoia Public Beta arrives in July. You’ll need to sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program at beta.apple.com with an Apple ID, enroll your device by installing a configuration profile and perform a restart.
