If your iPhone or iPad runs iOS 17 or iPadOS 17, rest assured it’s compatible with Apple’s iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 software updates—with a few notable exceptions.

Apple previewed the key improvements in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. The operating systems will launch for public consumption sometime before the new iPhones in September.

According to the company, the system requirements for installing iOS 18 haven’t changed since iOS 17—your iPhone will run it as long as it’s compatible with iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. But some iPad models are no longer compatible with iPadOS 18.

iOS 18 system requirements: Compatible iPhone models

iOS 18 requires Apple’s A12 Bionic chip. If your iPhone is powered by an A11 Bionic or older, it won’t be able to download and install the update.

The system requirements for iPadOS 18 have changed slightly over iPadOS 17, as the latest operating system requires at least an Apple A12 Bionic.

Any iPads powered by the A10 Fusion and A11 Bionic chips are incompatible, including the M1 iPad Air, 10.5-inch iPad Pro and second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. If your iPad is one of these, you’ll need a newer model for iPadOS 18.

iPadOS 18 device compatibility list:

  • iPad Pro (2018 and later)
  • iPad Air (2019 and later)
  • iPad (2019 and later)
  • iPad mini (2019 and later)

Apple Intelligence system requirements

Apple Intelligence, an umbrella term denoting a set of generative AI features available across the iPhone, iPad and Mac with iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia, requires Apple’s A17 Pro chip or any Apple silicon Mac chip.

In other words, taking full advantage of the Apple Intelligence features on the iPhone requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later. As for the iPad and Mac, if your tablet or computer is powered by the Apple M1 silicon chip or newer, you’ll be good.

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 launching this fall

As usual, Apple will be testing iOS 18 and other OS updates with its registered developers who are members of the Apple Developer Program. The general public can take iOS and iPadOS 18 for a spin when public betas arrive in July.

If interested, sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program at beta.apple.com. You only need an Apple ID to become a member; membership is free. Remember that you’ll need to install a special configuration profile and restart the device to download the beta using the familiar Software Update mechanism.

iOS 18 will launch ahead of new iPhones in September. iPadOS 18 should arrive alongside iOS 18 unless Apple has some new iPads planned for October.
