Apple Intelligence will have a waitlist at first

You’ll need to sign up to use Apple Intelligence when iOS 18 launches this fall, but there’ll be a waitlist and performance issues during a limited beta preview.

Apple Intelligence, a set of AI-powered features available across the iPhone, iPad and Mac, will be initially provided in beta capacity when iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia launch this fall. There will likely be a waitlist, too.

Apple Intelligence is codenamed Graymatter. Aaron Perris shared on X some strings he’s discovered in the iOS 18 code which reference a waitlist, inviting the user to “Join the Graymatter Waiting List” and informing them they’ve “Joined Waitlist.”

Apple Intelligence may require a waitlist

Apple didn’t mention a waitlist, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be one when Apple Intelligence launches in the fall. “Apple Intelligence is free for users, and will be available in beta as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia this fall in US English,” according to the iOS 18 press release published in the Apple Newsroom.

Apple Intelligence requires at least Apple’s 17 Pro chip powering the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max or the M1 or later iPad or Mac. Both the Siri language and device language must be set to US English. Apple Intelligence is free to use.

Many Apple Intelligence features use on-device processing without sending anything to servers. However, more complex generative AI features may require internet connectivity as Apple uses OpenAI’s GPT-4o engine to process such queries.

Bypassing regional restrictions for Apple Intelligence

While Apple Intelligence is in limited preview, “you may experience unusually slow responses when not in a supported region,” according to one of the strings Aaron unearthed from the iOS 18 code.

The wording of this message suggests you may be able to bypass regional restrictions for Apple Intelligence. For example, someone from Mozambique could set their iPhone language in Settings > General > Language & Region and the Siri language in Settings > Siri > Language to English (United States).

This is the same trick you can use to enable Apple services that are unavailable in your country, like Apple News.
