We have standard and Pro-branded iPhones, iPads and Macs, so why not Apple Pencil to? But what features might “Apple Pencil Pro” support?

The X account @ribu_ap712 has spotted references to “Apple Pencil Pro” in the Apple Japan’s website code. No other information was provided about the possible features, but the fact that Apple references this term is your semi-official confirmation that a Pro-branded Apple Pencil is coming.

Even though the reference is absent from Apple’s US website, this isn’t a slip-up on Apple’s part but rather a controlled leak. Need more proof? Apple’s tweaked its artistic “Let Loose” logo so the hand appears to erase the logo by drawing with a Pencil over it. The eraser function could be one of the features of the next Apple Pencil. Another one could be haptic feedback.

Please simplify the iPad + Apple Pencil lineup

For one, I hope this rumor proves true. Apple currently sells three different styluses, and all share the same brand name. There’s the original Apple Pencil, the second generation model and the USB-C one.

Each model supports a different set of features. Go visit this Apple page and check out a table comparing the features and compatibility requirements for all the different Pencil models currently offered. To most people, this is madness.
Little wonder there’s been much talk about the confusion in the iPad + Apple Pencil lineup and the need for a clearer separation between the different models.

I like how “Apple Pencil Pro” sounds

On the Mac side, your choices are desktop vs. mobile and consumer vs. pro. We also have standard and Pro-branded iPhones and iPads. With the Apple Pencil now an important part of the Apple tablet experience, Apple needs to bring some order into the chaotic iPad + Apple Pencil lineup.

If it just adds a Pro-branded Pencil to the mix, the confusion will only escalate.

Apple’s event could have a run time of just 35 minutes. A pre-taped keynote is scheduled to broadcast live tomorrow, May 7, at 7am PT / 10am ET. You can watch the “Let Loose” keynote on YouTube, Apple’s website and its TV app.
