An updated Vision Pro headset will arrive at the end of 2026, but Apple will have to figure out how to bring the price down.

Following a preview at the WWDC23, Vision Pro debuted in February of this year with a hefty price tag. Following the launch, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said a second-generation model was “at least 18 months away.”

In a new Bloomberg article, Gurman clarified that Apple’s roadmap “doesn’t currently call for a second-generation model until the end of 2026.”

Rumor: No Vision Pro successor ’til the end of 2026

Here’s an excerpt:

Apple’s latest Vision Pro road map doesn’t currently call for a second-generation model until the end of 2026, though the company is trying to figure out a way to bring a cheaper version to market before then. Apple is still flummoxed by how exactly to bring down the cost, I’m told.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has called for two versions of the Vision Pro successor, one using cheaper components and iPhone-class chips to bring the price down and the other a high-end model that could cost even more than the original.

Apple working to boost the margins on Vision Pro

Kuo said in February that Vision Pro successors won’t be mass-produced until 2027. He also learned that Apple wants to produce Vision Pro models whose “user experience will not differ from the current model” in late 2025 or early 2026.

The wording implies that Apple is looking to optimize production processes and use more affordable components to boost its margins on the $3500 device. While Gurman and Kuo are reliable when uncovering secrets about unreleased Apple products, their timeframes can be off.

Vision Pro embarking on a global tour this year

Apple hasn’t announced which countries will get the headset next. If references in the visionOS code are anything to go by, the device should expand to nearly a dozen new countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

Apple’s boss Tim Cook confirmed earlier that the mixed-reality device will hit China, its second-largest market by revenue, in 2024. Vision Pro is currently only available to purchase in the United States,
