Find out how to set your iPhone to automatically open Google Maps, Apple Maps, or some other app the moment you start wired or wireless CarPlay.
I like having Google Maps on my car’s screen, even when I’m going somewhere nearby, because it lets me see small roads, turns, traffic, and other details.
Since I have taken the time to remove several unnecessary apps from my CarPlay screen, all it usually requires is a tap to open Google Maps. However, my car’s infotainment system takes a while to recognize and auto-activate CarPlay after I plug in my iPhone. This means I have to wait and then open Google Maps; that often causes friction.
To address this, I have set up an automation that automatically fires up Google Maps on my car’s screen the moment CarPlay activates. I no longer have to wait and tap the Maps icon before engaging with the steering wheel.
This tip is also useful for parents and grandparents who find Maps helpful on their car’s screen but don’t want to fiddle with it before each drive.
Of course, you’re free to set any other app to auto-open when CarPlay activates; the steps are the same.
Open Maps automatically on the car screen when CarPlay activates
1) Open the built-in Apple Shortcuts app on your iPhone and tap Automation from the bottom menu row.
2) Tap New Automation or the plus button (+) to create a new one.
3) Select CarPlay from the list of conditions.
4) Leave ‘Is Connected’ checked and ‘Is Disconnected’ unchecked. Then tap Run Immediately to run the automation without your approval, and tap Next.
5) Tap the Open App tile at the top.
6) Tap the App placeholder text and select Google Maps, Apple Maps, or any other app you want.
7) Finally, tap the checkmark icon to finish saving your automation.
Moving forward, when you connect your iPhone to your car to start wired or wireless CarPlay (or if it auto-connects), the chosen app (Google Maps in our case) will automatically appear on the full infotainment screen. You don’t have to do a thing.
For me, I just plug in the USB cable, and after a few seconds, CarPlay starts automatically, and Google Maps appears on the screen. I don’t have to wait or tap anything.
If you repeat the above steps and set up more than one automation, it only seems to open the app from the first automation.
And if you ever want to stop this, just return to the automation section of the iPhone Shortcuts app, swipe left on this CarPlay automation, and delete it. You could also tap the automation and set ‘Run Immediately’ to ‘Don’t Run.’

Learn what to do if your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Vision Pro automatically blurs nude photos and videos and warns you of them, even though you don’t want this friction.
But before you do that, it’s important to understand what this feature (Communication Safety) does.
About Communication Safety
The Communication Safety feature in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS blurs sensitive photos and videos that contain nudity and warns the viewer. Multiple interventions and helpful resource options are also offered before viewing or sharing the sensitive media.
Overall, this is a useful safety feature designed primarily for children, though adults can also enable it to avoid seeing unwanted nude photos and videos.
All processing to determine whether a media item contains nudity happens locally on the device, and the photo or video itself isn’t sent to Apple’s servers.
Communication Safety works in Messages, AirDrop, shared photo albums, FaceTime video calls and video messages, and Contact Posters. It’s also available when selecting nude photos or videos in some third-party apps.
The feature is enabled by default when you set up an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro for children under 18. And adults can choose to turn it on in Screen Time settings if they want.
Additionally, if you have set a Screen Time passcode for your under-13 child’s device, they won’t be able to view the sensitive media without your approval.
Turn off Communication Safety
It doesn’t make sense to turn it off for your child’s device, even if some non-nude photo or video is falsely marked as sensitive. The benefits of this feature outweigh any false flags.
However, if you, an adult, find this feature causing issues with your adult texting or media-sharing experience, here are the steps to turn it off.
1) Open the Settings app on iPhone, iPad, or Vision Pro or System Settings on Mac.
2) Tap Screen Time.
3) Select Communication Safety under the Communication heading.
4) Turn off Communication Safety. Enter the Screen Time passcode if prompted.
You can now view and share nude photos and videos without your device coming in between.
