  • Ball Merger is Challenging But Ads Are Out of Control

    Reviewed by Jimbo

Ball Merger is challenging enough as a math-related skill game, but the overabundance of ads makes it almost unplayable.

    Features:

As suggested by its name, Ball Merger, by AppGuru, is definitely a fresh idea in the app store and is a game where numbers matter but not as much as a deft touch with the controls.

Specifically, players in this challenging app are given the task of shooting balls to a matching number in order to merge similar balls together. If you do this you get higher tiles, and reach a high score.

However, just knowing what number to merge isn’t enough to dominate in this game. Instead, the sensitivity of the shooter can make it so that you can’t actually, with any reasonable amount of skill, shoot the ball exactly where you want to.

This app would definitely benefit from an overhaul of the UI, the way players control the ball and the ways that points are scored. We like varying levels of difficulty but it has to start with well executed player controls.

We would also like to see the ads scaled back. We totally understand that devs need to earn a return for their efforts but like too many “free” games, the ads are out of control.

As a whole, we found this game to be fresh and fun but in need of some polish. It is a simple concept, but it definitely takes awhile to get the hang of. In-app instructions are decently clear, but there is still a learning curve when first starting out.

    Appearance and Layout:

    Ball Merger iPhone Game

Just as Ball Merger has a pretty simplistic concept of gameplay, the artwork within the app is very simple as well. Things are kept to a minimum; during games most of playing area takes up the majority of your screen, with a small portion dedicated to showing scores.

Of course with this relatively simple game detailed designs really aren’t needed; the simplicity of the graphics matches perfectly with the overall feeling of the app. There’s nothing spectacular here but then again there doesn’t need to be.

Getting around the app is easy to do as well; a home screen shows you a few navigational options to get you oriented when first starting out.

    Value:

Ball Merger is a free app and it costs $2.99 to remove the ads. It features simple graphics and fun gameplay, and while it might take new players a bit of time to really get the hang of, it’s definitely a game that will delight anyone who loves a good pick-up-and-play game.

The game is certainly worth checking out and if it’s to your liking, you’d do well to pony up the three bucks and remove the ads.

Ball Merger requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

  • Apple App of the Day: 24FPS – Video Filter & LUT

    24FPS – Video Filter & LUT

It’s no secret that the camera built into your iPhone is an amazing device. This goes for its physical construction, a true innovation in materials and manufacturing technique, as well as the software that controls it.

In old-style video cameras the image you point your camera at, whether in focus or not, is projected onto the silver halide of the film loaded into it.

More recent video cameras used magnetic media to store images in a helical pattern on the tape as it moves across the recording head. Standard formats for recording on magnetic tape were/are VHS, BetaMax, 8mm and more.

For digital video cameras the considerations are a bit different.

Better quality cameras, including those built into smartphones, collect the light coming in through the lenses and create a video data file.

Once you have your video file, regardless of the format, the real interesting work is just beginning. As with old light-sensitive film, it’s post production editing that really matters and lets the artists among you truly express yourselves.

    24FPS – Video Filter & LUT

With film it’s all about your work in the edit room. With digital files it’s all about the software you use to manipulate the resulting file.

This is where 24FPS – Video Filter & LUT, from Polarr, Inc., shines.

If you’re looking to shoot videos with a cinematic look, you need the filters that do that. It also helps to have a LUT (Look Up Table) that lets you properly change the colors of the images. This app give you both.

From adjusting HSL, temperature, and highlights to stabilizing footage, to special effects such as face thinning and realistic skin smoothing and laying down an audio track, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to give your work a professional look.

In addition to all the controls and filters at your fingertips, 24FPS also features an AI component that makes day-to-day working with the app even easier to the best results with the least amount of work.

The final kicker is that on the latest hardware you can actually do all of this and more while recording and saving filtered videos with no delay.

Overall 24FPS is an incredible app with its filters, special effects and full editing suite that any aspiring videographer would do well to add to their toolset.

Note that while the app is free to download and includes a 7 Day Free Trial, to use it after that you have to subscribe to one of the plans available; $3.99 per month or $28.99 per year.

24FPS – Video Filter & LUT requires iOS 12.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

    Apple App Store Rating: 4.7
