In this troubleshooting guide, we go over possible solutions to fix the problem where the colorful iPhone or iPad Lock Screen and Home Screen wallpaper turn all black or become dim.

Several iOS 26 users have reported black wallpaper on the Lock Screen and Home Screens after updating their iPhones to iOS 26 or a later version, such as iOS 26.3. After diving deeper, I also found similar complaints dating back to iOS 18 and iOS 16.

Users have shared that their perfectly normal family or other beautiful wallpapers would disappear, leaving the iOS Lock Screen fully black. In other cases, the wallpaper dims, and the set photo isn’t visible clearly.

After reviewing hundreds of replies, here are the solutions that seem to have worked for different iPhone users.

Restart your iPhone

Temporary system glitches can cause your iPhone wallpaper to appear differently than intended. Simply reboot your iOS device, and this problem should go away.

Update to the latest version of iOS 26

If your iPhone or iPad is running an early version of iOS 26 or iPadOS 26, update to the most recent version available at the time you’re reading this.

Try delinking Focus from wallpaper

You can link Lock Screens to the Focus feature. As an example, if you have a Lock Screen with motivational wallpaper, you can have it show automatically when you enter Workout Focus.

Follow these steps to delink Focus with a Lock Screen and check if the wallpaper going black or its dimming issue is solved:

1. Touch and hold your iPhone Lock Screen until it shrinks down.
2. If a Focus is linked (in which case it will say the Focus name instead of just Focus), tap it and then uncheck the linked Focus.
3. Tap the X button and return to your Lock Screen. Hopefully, the issue should be solved now.

About Sleep focus, which dims the Lock Screen

iPhone Lock Screen goes black or super dim by design when in Sleep Focus mode. There is no way to stop this, aside from turning off the Sleep mode altogether. You can also go to iOS Settings > Focus > Sleep and tap Options under the Customize Screens section to turn off the Sleep Screen, but it won’t make the Lock Screen restore normal appearance, as long as Sleep Focus is active.

Turn off Reduce Transparency

If you don’t like the new Liquid Design interface of iOS 26, one way to tone it down is to activate Reduce Transparency in Accessibility settings.

Some users have shared on the Apple Community forum that turning off Reduce Transparency, albeit temporarily, has helped fix the black wallpaper issue for them. Here’s how you should proceed:

1. Open iPhone or iPad Settings and go to Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
2. Turn off Reduce Transparency if it’s active.
3. Restart your iPhone. The black or dim wallpaper issue should be fixed.
4. If you must use Reduce Transparency, head back to accessibility settings and enable it again. Wallpaper should no longer turn black.

Switch to the tinted Liquid Glass style

A few users have also shared that switching to Tinted Liquid Glass look instead of Clear has fixed the weird wallpaper issue for them. Try it out yourself in iOS 26 Settings > Display & Brightness > Liquid Glass.

Set the wallpaper again

In case you started seeing the black or dimmed wallpaper after making adjustments to your current Lock Screen, skip that and set a new Lock Screen wallpaper all over again using the same image in your photo library.

Don’t use spatial scene wallpaper

iOS 26 allows you to set a 3D Lock Screen wallpaper (Spatial Scene) that moves when you tilt your iPhone. If you’re experiencing unwanted black wallpaper in this mode, set a normal, non-moving wallpaper instead.

Reset all settings

If the above solutions have not worked and living with this issue is not an option for you, consider resetting all iOS settings. It should make the problem go away.

Wait for a future update

In case nothing helps, wait for a future iOS 26 or even iOS 27 update, and hopefully Apple fixes the issue by then (fingers crossed).

In this quick tutorial, we’ll explain why you might want to change the date of birth (DOB) in your Apple Account and how to do so on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or a web browser.

Like most online accounts, when you create your Apple Account (formerly called an Apple ID), you are asked to enter your birth month, day, and year.

Apple uses these details to calculate your age, which is then used to tailor your experience on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other Apple services. For instance, when you set up a new iPhone with your child’s account, Apple will automatically enable some safety features like blurring out nude pictures received on iMessage.

Reasons to change your Apple Account birthday

First off, you may want to update your DOB if you entered it incorrectly when creating your account.

Changing the account birthday can give or block access to age-restricted apps, songs, movies, TV shows, Game Center features, some app features, in-app purchases, and more.

Apple now also lets third-party apps access a user’s age range, so the app can tailor a safe, appropriate experience for them. Therefore, setting the right age is important.

And finally, you may want to reduce the Apple Account age of your adult son, daughter, or family members, if you want to manage Screen Time and restrictions for them even after they have turned 18. Conversely, if you want to turn a child’s Apple Account into a normal account, manually changing their date of birth is the way to do so.

But before you proceed, note that Apple may (rarely) ask you to verify using your date of birth for account recovery or other identity verification purposes. So it’s advisable to save the correct details, but if you must use another date, note it somewhere safe for future reference.

Caution: A birthday is something that you should not change or update often. If you do it multiple times in a short span, Apple may restrict your account.

Change the date of birth for your Apple Account

You can update it from your Apple device or web browser. Here are the steps for all.

iPhone or iPad

1) Open the iOS Settings app.

2) Tap your Apple Account name at the top.

3) Tap Personal Information.

4) Select the Birthday option.

5) Use the calendar layout to select another date, day, or year, as needed, and tap the checkmark icon to save the details.

Mac

1. Open System Settings and click your Apple Account name in the top left corner.
2. Select Personal Information.
3. Update your Date of Birth, and it will auto-save.

Web browser

If you no longer have an Apple device, you can change the date of birth using a web browser. Just make sure you have access to the phone number added to your Apple Account so you can receive the login verification code.

1. Head over to account.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account email address, password, and one-time code.
2. Click Personal Information on the left.
3. Click Birthday.
4. Use the Month, Date, and Year drop-downs to add the new birthday and click the Save button.
