PS DualSense controllers will let you switch between four devices without re-pairing

Multi-device pairing for Sony’s PlayStation DualSense controllers will let you switch between your iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV on the fly.

Sony announced on its official PlayStation blog that controller pairing across multiple devices became available for beta testing on July 24. The company says it plans to release the update globally in the coming months, which could mean September.

Once you have paired the controller with up to four different devices, like your console, Apple TV, Mac and iPad, you’ll be able to seamlessly switch between the paired devices without having to unpair the controller from the current device and pair it again with a new one.

How to pair multiple devices with your PS DualSense controller

When Sony releases the new PlayStation firmware for public consumption, you’ll need to install it on your console, which will also update the firmware on your DualSense controllers. You’ll then hold down the PS button and one of the action buttons for at least five seconds to enter Bluetooth pairing mode and assign a new device to one of the four available slot.

The light bar and player indicator flash two times to indicate the controller is in pairing mode. Then, simply select the controller from another device’s (iPhone, iPad, Mac) Bluetooth menu to finish pairing. You can do this when the controller is turned on or off. However, the controller’s light bar and player indicator must be turned off for this to work. Otherwise, press and hold the PS button until they turn off.

“Until now, pairing was required each time you connected a DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller to a different device, such as PC, Mac, and mobile devices,” Sony explains. “With this update, you can now register up to four devices simultaneously, and easily switch between them directly from your controller.”

How to switch between the paired DualSense devices

You can quickly switch between the paired devices by pressing a Triangle, Circle, Cross or Square button along with the PS button for about three seconds.

When the light bar and player indicator blink, release both buttons. The light bar lights up, and the player light will blink to indicate the slot number. Blinking once indicates the Triangle slot, two lights mean Circle, three lights are for Cross, and four lights indicate Square.

“You can take your controller which you use with your PS5, then seamlessly switch connection to a PC to play PC games, or connect it to a smartphone to enjoy Remote Play from your PS5,” says Sony. “With this enhanced flexibility, you can enjoy gaming more freely across multiple devices.”

Will this feature expand to the PSVR2 Sense motion controller?

Sony didn’t say if this feature will expand to its other controllers, including the PSVR2 Sense motion controller which is fully supported on the Vision Pro via Apple’s upcoming visionOS 26 operating system. Speaking of which, the iPhone maker is rumored to gauge demand for third-party controller as it may eventually develop its own Vision Pro hand controller or in-air stylus.

The firmware update that contains DualSense multi-device pairing also includes another new feature, a dedicated power saver mode for supported PS5 games, which will reduce performance and power consumption. This feature will be optional.
