How to install tvOS 27 on your Apple TV

In this step-by-step tutorial, we show you how to download and install the latest tvOS 27 developer beta on your Apple TV so you can try it out before it’s available to everyone later this year.

Note that tvOS 27 is only supported on 2nd- and 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K models released in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Older Apple TV models that supported tvOS 26, namely the Apple TV HD and the 1st-generation Apple TV 4K, are no longer compatible.

Download tvOS 27 on Apple TV

Follow these steps if you have previously used developer beta software on your Apple TV or any other device, like your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

    1) Open the Settings app on your Apple TV and make sure it’s connected to a working Wi-Fi network or Ethernet.

    2) Select System from the bottom of the screen.

    3) Select Software Updates.

    4) Wait a couple of seconds until the Beta Updates option shows up on the screen and select it.

    5) Now, select tvOS 27 Developer Beta.

    6) You’ll now see an ‘Apple TV Update’ popup; select Download and Install here.

tvOS 27 should start downloading soon. It will then prepare and install itself.

If you have never used the developer beta on your devices, head to developer.apple.com/account and sign in with your Apple Account for free to register your account as a developer. Then, wait a few minutes and follow the above steps again. Restart your Apple TV if you don’t see the new tvOS 27 update.

We have talked more about getting developer beta updates in our guides on installing iOS 27 and iOS 26; check them out, as the basics are the same.

    New tvOS 27 features

Apple didn’t talk about tvOS 27 at their June 2026 keynote, as the main focus was on the new Siri AI. Still, here are some notable changes your Apple TV will get with this update.

tvOS 27 offers faster app launches, smoother animations, quicker AirPlay connectivity with other Apple devices, and a more responsive Control Center.

If you listen to podcasts on your TV, you’ll notice that the app has been visually revamped, which I think is an overall good change.

You can now also increase the system text size by going to Settings > Accessibility > Display > Text Size.

There is a new smart downloads feature that I assume should save what you’re likely to watch for offline viewing.

And when you go to tvOS 27 Settings > General, you’ll notice a new AppleCare & Warranty option that gives you more information about it, as seen in the screenshot below.

Additionally, some reports also say improved game controller settings and Hi-Res Lossless audio support in Apple Music.

How to draw in Notes on Mac in macOS 27

In this brief tutorial, we show you how to draw and sketch right in the Apple Notes app on your Mac running macOS 27 Golden Gate, without having to rely on your iPhone, iPad, or external touchscreen devices.

The incredible Continuity feature has allowed Mac users to sketch in the Notes app by opening a virtual drawing board on their iPhone or iPad. However, it relied on the user having at least one iOS device linked to the same Apple Account as their Mac. Secondly, the temporary virtual board on the iPhone and iPad is handy for casual use, but it’s not ideal for prolonged sketching or sessions that require breaks.

macOS 27 fixes all that by adding a native drawing tool to the Notes app.

While seemingly an innocent feature, this also hints at the upcoming MacBook (maybe called MacBook Ultra) with a touchscreen (fingers crossed till late 2026 or early 2027).

Draw and sketch in the macOS 27 Notes app

    1) Update your Mac to macOS 27 by enabling beta updates in System Settings > General > Software Update or by using a bootable USB installer. You can also install macOS Golden Gate on a second partition of the same Mac.

    2) Open the Notes app and create a new note or go inside an existing one. You can also work in a note that already has normal typed text.

    3) Click the Markup icon, as shown in the screenshot below.

Sketching in Notes app on Mac

You have the following tools at your disposal. If you have used Markup on iPhone, it will feel right at home.

Selection tool: Lets you select your drawing and then change the size, move it around, etc.

Drawing tools: You can use Pen, Monoline, Marker, Pencil, Crayon, Fountain Pen, Reed, and Watercolor tools. After selecting one, don’t forget to further select that tool’s style (like brush thickness). There is also an Eraser option to remove errors and fix them.

Color picker: Click the small dot to pick a different color. You can also change the color afterward by using the selection tool to select an existing drawing, then change its color.

Shapes: Click the circle-square icon and select from line, arrow, square, square with rounded corners, circle, speech box, star, and a hexagon.

Text: Click the A icon to add text.

Signature: Add an existing signature or create a new one and add it.

Once you’re done sketching, click the Markup icon again to exit drawing mode.

Of course, like all other notes, these too sync via iCloud and appear on your other devices. And you can edit a sketch started on your Mac on your iPhone or iPad.

One weird thing I noticed is that if you use a tool for a long time without a break (like dragging the pen tool around for a while without lifting your finger from the trackpad), the entire sketch for that session disappears. Sometimes, making another small sketch and then pressing Command + Z seems to bring back the disappeared sketch. Other times, this trick doesn’t work. I assume this is a bug in the initial version of macOS 27 developer beta, which will be polished soon.
