iPhone 17 could be offered in a brand new purple or green color finish

Apple is allegedly testing purple and green color finishes for the base iPhone 17 models, although only one color might make the final cut.
The information comes via Majin Bu, a smartphone leaker with a mixed track record who correctly predicted that iPadOS 26 would have a menu bar like the Mac. He also had some notable misses in the past, like saying ahead of the WWDC25 that iOS 26 would add Stage Manager to USB-C iPhones, which didn’t come true.
Bu’s blog post doesn’t make it clear whether the new purple or green color would replace one of the color finishes or join them as a new option.
Rumor: Base iPhone 17 could be offered in purple (or green)
“While both are under consideration, only one color might make the final cut, with expectations leaning toward Purple being the likely choice for release,” he said. The purple color finish is described as a “vibrant and modern hue crafted for those seeking a device with a bold personality.” This one could be popular with women.
Bu thinks green may offer “a fresh and natural tone, ideal for a minimalist yet striking aesthetic.” In contrast, base iPhone 16 models are offered in five color options that Apple’s marketing department calls Ultramarine, Teal, Pink, White and Black.
Apple will unveil the iPhone 17 lineup in September, with a Plus model expected to be replaced by a new ultra-thin iPhone, dubbed by the press as iPhone Air. Apple typically offers standard iPhones in more vibrant and playful colors than the Pro models, which always come in boring colors with very little visual variance between the different Pro color finishes.
Claimed iPhone 17 specs
Bu also reiterated some of his earlier claims regarding technical specifications for the base iPhone 17 models. If he’s right, base iPhones will for the first time get a 120Hz screen refresh rate (he doesn’t mention ProMotion technology) for smooth scrolling, gaming and animations.
The devices should feature an aluminum frame with a glass backside for wireless charging, a camera optimized for low-light photography and an optimized version of the iPhone 16’s A18 chip featuring “superior energy efficiency.”
The iPhone 17 lineup is also expected to adopt the latest Qi 2.2 protocol for faster wireless charging at up to 50W, or more than three times what the current Qi 2.1 protocol allows, although Apple may limit charging speed for safety reasons. All models in the lineup, including the base iPhone 17, should be equipped with 12GB of RAM instead of 8GB to better support Apple Intelligence.
