At WWDC 2025, Apple said that it would be introducing what’s known as the Foundation Models framework with the launch of iOS & iPadOS 26, which is a new API that will allow developers to harness the foundation model that powers Apple’s first-party artificial intelligence baby, also known as Apple Intelligence.

Using this framework, developers can augment their apps with AI-centric features using the device’s local hardware and without phoning out to external servers to complete the same or similar requests. This means that apps can perform AI-centric tasks offline, without the cloud-oriented costs, and with greater privacy than with current methods.

While examples for how developers might take advantage of this API remain somewhat scarce at this time, Apple demoed a study app taking advantage of the Foundation Models framework to generate a personalized mock quiz based on someone’s hand-written school notes. Such tools could help students prepare for real tests in school and potentially improve grades.

Apple noted that the Apple Developer Program would offer free access to a beta of the framework starting today, and that public beta access would begin next month. This beta is intended to familiarize developers and interested parties with the Apple Intelligence experience, priming them for updating their apps when iOS & iPadOS 26 officially launch this Fall.

With the rise of AI-centric features in today’s app and internet experiences, this has the potential to transform how app developers offer services to consumers on Apple’s mobile devices for the better. It will be interesting to see how app developers take advantage of these new resources.
