Apple previews redesigned Liquid Glass user interfaces on iPhone, other devices

Apple has previewed the overhauled user interfaces across the iPhone and other devices, known as Liquid Glass, at the WWDC2025 today.
The new user interface was rumored heavily ahead of the show, and now it’s official. Dubbed internally Liquid Glass, the updated user interfaces across iOS 26 and other updates make using Apple devices more logical with consistent interface elements that borrow from the visionOS software.
Apple’s software engineering chief Craig Federighi called it a once-in-a-decade project, with Alan Dye (VP of user interfaces) reviewing the new user interfaces. Inspired by the physicality and richness of the Vision Pro interface, Apple has rethought the fundamental elements. Called Liquid Glass, the new look delivers fluidity and glass-like dimensionality that reacts to your movement, with background elements showing through the glass-like elements.
Here’s Apple’s overhauled Liquid Glass user interface
Liquid Glass makes use of translucency that looks great in Dark and Light modes, including a whole new clear look. The new design puts more groups of controls under the contextual menus to simplify the user interface.

App icons have stayed the same, but there’s now a new translucent look for them when you turn on the new clear view. The Lock Screen automatically resizes the time as notifications come in, creating a cool parallax effect. There’s also a 3D effect when you move the device while on the Lock Screen, similar to the wallpaper parallax effect. Plus, the Now Playing widget now takes up the whole screen.

The built-in Camera app has been revamped with a more intuitive design that hides more options behind menus to simplify the interface, revealed by swiping left or right. You can reveal all your settings with a swipe-up gesture without visiting the Settings app.
The Photos app now features two tabs for Library and Collections, with the Lock Screen’s 3D effect now available for your photos, too. In Safari, web pages flow edge-to-edge to the very bottom of the screen, with the redesigned tab bar floating above the web page and automatically shrinking when you scroll.

The FaceTime app has received a landing page with personalized contact posters, auto-playing video messages, and more. The redesigned FaceTime app is also available on CarPlay, which has received a Liquid Glass treatment and now supports widgets and live activities.

The new look brings greater consistency to platforms. Plus, Apple also confirmed that it’s renamed its operating systems with year-based numbers to simplify writing about and referencing them. For further information, keep your eye on the Apple Newsroom and apple.com/ios.
