Apple’s glassy design overhaul allegedly extends to the Apple Watch and Apple TV

Apple’s iPhone, iPad and Mac software design overhaul will extend to the Apple Watch and Apple TV with the upcoming watchOS 12 and tvOS 19 updates.

Mark Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that this year’s Vision Pro-like redesign of the user interfaces with iOS 19, iPadOS 19 and macOS 16 will extend to the watchOS 12 and tvOS operating systems.

Don’t expected major visual changes in watchOS 12 and tvOS 9, as Gurman states in the newsletter that the Apple Watch’s user interface would only be revamped “here and there.” He said nothing of the visual changes coming to tvOS 19.

Apple’s rumored design overhaul, coming this year, allegedly includes the Apple Watch and Apple TV

“When I broke the news earlier this year about the new look, I noted it would come to iOS, macOS and iPadOS. But it will actually go further and touch all of Apple’s operating systems,” reads the report. “That means tvOS and watchOS will both be redesigned to match their more popular siblings, while visionOS will get some adjustments — in cases where the changes make sense for a headset.”

The effort will extend to the visionOS software that inspired these visual tweaks in the first place. The OS redesign is codenamed “Solarium” after glass rooms that allowsunlight in. Gurman describes the new look as “slicker and more modern.”

The approach takes many of its cues from visionOS, which, if you’ve used a Vision Pro, feels a lot fresher than today’s versions of iOS, iPadOS and macOS. One of the major themes this year is consistency and unification across the operating systems, which will be especially apparent when comparing Macs and iPads.

Apple will preview iOS 19 in a June 9 keynote at its Worldwide Developers Conference, a five-day event held from June 9-13. Gurman says the rumored OS redesign will be the highlight of the show. The first iOS 19 beta should be released to developers after the keynote wraps up. Versions for public testing will likely follow a few weeks later. Apple will release iOS 19 alongside other updates for public consumption in September, ahead of the new iPhone 17 lineup.

The biggest design update since The Great Flattening

Gurman recently broke the iOS 19 redesign news, originally saying that the glassy overhaul would be restricted to the iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple apparently wants to make the user interfaces on the iPhone, iPad and Mac more consistent to make it easier to move between devices (or detract haters from its failed AI push).

“A key goal of the overhaul is to make Apple’s different operating systems look similar and more consistent,” said Gurman in March. “Right now, the applications, icons and window styles vary across macOS, iOS and visionOS. That can make it jarring to hop from one device to another.”

The redesign is said to bring certain UI elements from the visionOS software powering Apple’s Vision Pro headset—which users translucent, glassy windows—including “updating the style of icons, menus, apps, windows and system buttons.” Apple has no intention to merge iOS 19, iPadOS 19 and macOS 16 into a single unified operating system, Gurman has it.

iOS 19 is said to mark the biggest visual to the iPhone’s user interface since The Great Flattening in iOS 7 back in 2013. Gurman also said that macOS 16 will be biggest design update for the Mac since macOS Big Sur, released in 2020.
