Apple Calendar redesign to “reimagine what a modern calendar can be”

A redesigned Calendar app has been rumored for iOS 19, iPadOS 19 and macOS 16, and now the project has been confirmed in a new job post from Apple.
The posting, listed on April 29, seeks a candidate to join Apple’s team that will “reimagine what a modern calendar can be across Apple’s platforms.”
Macworld spotted that Apple is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Calendar Experience. The job description doesn’t reveal whether Apple is also looking to infuse the built-in Calendar app on the iPhone, iPad and Mac with AI smarts to automate mundane tasks like its recent acquisition suggested.
More evidence that Apple is revamping the Calendar app
Mark Gurman first reported on a visual refresh to the Calendar app without offering any details. Earlier, Gurman said iOS 19, iPadOS 19 and macOS 16 will redesign the user interfaces across the iPhone, iPad and Mac, so a Calendar revamp could be viewed through the lens of bigger visual changes coming to Apple’s platforms.
The French-language blog MacGeneration recently confirmed that Apple in 2024 snapped up Mayday Labs, Canadian makers of the AI-powered Mayday calendar app. The software promised to “help you organize, protect and manage your day,” but got shuttered following the rumored acquisition deal.
The app used AI to schedule events and tasks automatically at optimal times while suggesting optional focus times. One feature, dubbed “Calendar Shield,” automatically blocked your calendar when you were overbooked with meetings.
Apple could incorporate the best features of Mayday into the stock Calendar app. But it’s more likely to be a typical acqui-hire, where a startup is acquired for its talent and expertise. Whatever redesign and AI smarts Apple has in store for Calendar should be previewed at the upcoming developer-focused WWDC25 in June.
An AI-infused Calendar
An AI-powered Calendar with a fresh new look and functionality, deeply integrated with the improved Siri assistant couldn’t come sooner, more so given Apple’s been adding new calendar features at a snail’s pace.
iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 added the ability to create, view, edit and complete reminders in the Calendar app alongside events. And that’s pretty much it for Calendar! No meaningful new features have been added to Calendar for many years, so power users turned to alternatives like FlexiBits’ excellent Fantastical app.
