iPadOS 19: Virtual calligraphy pen for Apple Pencil owners to write in Arabic script

An alleged new virtual calligraphy pen in iPadOS 19 will reportedly permit Apple Pencil owners to write digitally in Arabic script.
This is reportedly among the changes coming alongside iPadOS 19, Apple’s next major iPad software update that will be previewed at the company’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference in June and launched to the general public this fall alongside iOS 19 and other new operating systems.
Another change is said to include an advanced bi-directional keyboard for easy moving between Arabic and English on iPhones and iPads, Mark Gurman wrote in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg.
iPadOS 19: Apple Pencil calligraphy pen, new bi-directional keyboard
iPadOS 19 will apparently bring a virtual reed calligraphy pen that should presumably make it easier for Apple Pencil owners to digitally write in Arabic script. There will also be a new bi-directional keyboard for moving between Arabic and English.
I have two more notable features to share this week, and they play into Apple’s ambitions for the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and India. The company has been expanding its retail footprint in those places — and the markets are seen as future growth drivers. To that end, two relevant iOS and iPadOS features are coming. One is a highly advanced bi-directional keyboard for moving between Arabic and English. The other is a virtual reed calligraphy pen for Apple Pencil users.
Kamish reed calligraphy pens used for writing in the Arab, Iranian and Turkish scripts. The calligraphy pen will probably be adde to the systemwide Apple Pencil tool palette which hosts other pens, color swatches and drawing tools.
Apple has a history with calligraphy. Steve Jobs took a calligraphy class in college, which taught him about serif and sans-serif typefaces, varying the space between letter combinations and more. His experience would later inform the beautiful typography with multiple typefaces and proportionally spaced fonts built into the original Mac.
As for the “new highly advanced bi-directional keyboard,” Apple’s operating systems lack bi-directional keyboards outside its Pages, Numbers and Keynote apps.
Vision Pro eye scrolling, AI battery life and more
Gurman also reported recently that visionOS, the software powering Apple’s $3500 Vision Pro headset, will gain eye scrolling this fall across built-in apps and third-party apps that choose to implement the new functionality. This change is apparently part of the visionOS 3 update releasing this fall.
Gurman also said that iOS 19 will sync captive Wi-Fi login details and leverage Apple Intelligence to optimize battery life, which should be an important feature for the so-called iPhone Air which is expected to have worse battery life than other models due to its ultra-thin case.
iOS 19, iPadOS 19 and macOS 16 should also redesign the user interfaces across the iPhone, iPad and Mac to make the devices more consistent, Gurman has it.
