Safari could bring AI search integration via OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity

Apple could add AI search tools from companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity to Safari as an option, but won’t replace Google yet.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, testified in the remedies trial Google is facing over the Department of Justice’s attempts to break up its monopoly in the search market. Bloomberg reports that the iPhone maker is “actively looking at” possible deals with multiple upstarts to add AI-powered search engines to Safari.
Cue testified that Safari browser searches declined for the first time in April 2025 as people increasingly switched from traditional search engines to AI services like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. This suggests that Safari could support AI search technologies from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity in the future.
Safari could bring OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity integration as AI search rises in prominence
Cue believes those AI upstarts might upend traditional search engines like Google. “We will add them to the list — they probably won’t be the default.” Cut also said that Apple discussed browser integration with Perplexity’s executives.
“Prior to AI, my feeling around this was, none of the others were valid choices,” said the executive. “I think today there is much greater potential because there are new entrants attacking the problem in a different way.”
What makes this claim interesting is Apple’s longtime partnership with Google, which sees Apple receiving about $20 billion per year in traffic acquisition costs for making its search engine the default option on the iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Google has contested the claim that Apple users are searching less, saying in a statement that its search engine is still seeing overall query growth. “That includes an increase in total queries coming from Apple’s devices and platforms,“ the company wrote in a blog post.
“More generally, as we enhance Search with new features, people are seeing that Google Search is more useful for more of their queries — and they’re accessing it for new things and in new ways, whether from browsers or the Google app, using their voice or Google Lens.”
Anthropic could power AI writing in Xcode
Apple is rumored to also partner with the company on a “vibe-coding” software platform that will use Anthropic’s AI models to help developers write, edit and test apps in Xcode, Apple’s tool for software development on its platforms.
The report claims that Apple will roll out the software internally to its engineers. However, the company hasn’t made the decision yet on whether to launch Xcode AI writing publicly because Apple reportedly initially had reservations about AI writing code for the software that its paying customers are going to use daily.
Apple already uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology to power some of the Apple Intelligence features, and could tap additional AI providers in the future, like China’s Baidu and Alibaba.
