Apple’s iOS 18.5 sends a push notification to the parent’s iPhone when their child has entered the Screen Time passcode on their device.

The official iOS 18.5 release notes state that “parents now receive a notification when the Screen Time passcode is used on a child’s device.” Before iOS 18.5, parents had no indication that their junior just entered his or her Screen Time passcode. Compatible iPhone owners will be able to download iOS 18.5 next week.

If you’re a proud parent, chances are that your kids are always looking to outsmart you. Updating your iPhone to iOS 18.5 will give you a way to know instantly as soon as your kid has entered the Screen Time passcode on their device. This Screen Time feature is available on the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch with the iOS 18.5, iPadOS 18.5, macOS Sequoia 15.5 and watchOS 11.5 updates.

iOS 18.5 brings a Screen Time passcode fix, more

Aside from the Screen Time passcode notification for kids’ devices, iOS 18.5 also fixes a problem with the new Vision Pro iOS app displaying a black screen. In terms of new features, iOS 18.5 packs in support for carrier-provided satellite features (like T-Mobile’s Starlink service) on the iPhone 13 series.

Other noteworthy changes include a new Harmony wallpaper (also available in iPadOS 18.5) as part of the company’s 2025 Pride Collection, as well as carrier-provided satellite features such as T-Mobile’s Starlink service on the iPhone 13 series.

Last but not least, iOS 18.5 brings the ability to buy movies, shows and video subscriptions within Apple’s Apple TV app on a third-party device with an iPhone used to appprove the purchase via biometric authorization.

Screen Time in Family Sharing has an Ask to Buy problem

The built-in Family Sharing feature is great, although not without its pitfalls. Family Sharing is even better if you take into account Screen Time, an umbrella term denoting parental restrictions built into every iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch with the iOS 18.5, iPadOS 18.5, macOS Sequoia 15.5 and watchOS 11.5.

With Screen Time, you can impose various restrictions features for yourself or any child in your Family Sharing group. Unfortunately, the feature suffers from a huge Ask to Buy problem; even if you’ve set up Screen Time to be airtight sealed, your child can still download TikTok or any other app from the family download history without the Ask to Buy mechanism getting in the way. With Ask to Buy, the family organizer approves kids’ purchases via a notification received on their device.
