Google’s upcoming new two-person YouTube Premium subscription tier is great news for people who don’t want to commit to a full family plan.

Money Control reports that Google is testing a new subscription plan which lets two people who live together use YouTube Premium benefits like ad-free viewing and background play, which sounds similar to Spotify’s Duo subscription tier.

“We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option in some countries, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost,” a YouTube spokesperson told the publication.

YouTube Premium’s two-person plan is similar to Spotify’s Duo subscription tier

This is a great option for couples, roommates and just about anyone who doesn’t want to commit to a full family plan. YouTube Premium Family is much costlier at $23/month than the two-person tier in testing. As with the family subscription, each member of the two-person plan gets their own private, personalized account.

Both members must be 13 years or older, have a Google account and be a part of the same Google family group. The new plan is being tested in India, France, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, but watch this space as we’ll keep you in the loop and provide updates when the two-person plan rolls out more widely.

In India, two-person YouTube Premium costs 219 rupees, which works out to about $2.60/month, versus the Individual plan that’s available in exchange for a monthly fee of 149 rupees, or about $1.77/month. Indian pricing for student and family plans is 89 and 299 rupees, respectively, or $1.06 and $3.55.

For Music Premium, the monthly rates are 59 rupees ($0.70) for students, 119 rupees ($1.41) for individuals and 179 rupees ($2.12) for families.

YouTube Premium Lite is also rolling out

The new tier has entered testing shortly after YouTube launched a new Premium Lite plan for watching “most” videos ad-free (except when watching music content, Shorts, browsing or searching) without all the bells and whistles of the standard Premium subscription, in exchange for a lower monthly fee of eight bucks.

“Subscriptions are a key pillar of our business,” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said on a recent earnings call. “We continue to broaden our subscription portfolio, including the recent expansion of our Premium Lite pilot in the United States, providing users a new way to watch most YouTube videos without ads.”

YouTube Premium Lite has been in testing since August 2021, but it hasn’t yet fully rolled out. “Premium Lite on YouTube is currently only available in the United States, Australia, Germany, and Thailand,” but will expand to more users in the future, according to YouTube Help.

What does YouTube Premium include?

YouTube Premium offers several noteworthy perks, depending on the chosen tier. All plans offer ad-free viewing without interruptions across YouTube and YouTube Kids. Other benefits include background play on mobile devices, the ability to download videos to watch offline and unlimited access to YouTube Music.

YouTube Premium offers several subscription plans like Student ($8/month), Individual ($13/month, $140/year) and Family ($23/month), with a free one-month trial. For further information, visit youtube.com/premium.

New YouTube features

Google has also been testing several new features that could soon roll out to all users of its mobile app, including AI-powered overviews in search results that highlight clips from videos that will be most helpful for your search query.” The company also recently launched a new assistant feature that uses generative AI to create royalty-free instrumental tracks for your video projects.
