OpenAI is bringing new shopping features to ChatGPT to aid product discovery and comparison, including direct links and trending searches.

The official OpenAI account on X announced several shopping improvements for ChatGPT, including better results for visual searches with updated product cards displaying more details, pricing and reviews. The chatbot now serves direct links, so you can now also buy stuff in ChatGPT. OpenAI assures that “product results are chosen independently and are not ads.”

These enhancements are available globally starting today to free, paid and logged-out users across mobile, desktop and web platforms, with no update to the mobile app required. However, the phased rollout will take a few days to complete so check back later if you don’t have the new shopping experience yet.

ChatGPT introduces shopping improvements

According to the company, search has become one of our most popular and fastest-growing ChatGPT features, with over 1 billion searches performed through the web interface in the past week alone. These improvements make ChatGPT a viable product discovery and comparison engine, putting even more pressure on Google.

OpenAI announced other ChatGPT improvements like multiple citations for a given response so you can check sources of information more easily.

“We’ve also added a new ‘highlight’ UI to more clearly show which part of the answer the citation refers to,” OpenAI said in another tweet. ChatGPT search also got a boost with faster performance, trending searches and autocomplete suggestions.

How to get ChatGPT search on your iPhone

You can download ChatGTP in the App Store. If you already have the app installed on your device, open the ChatGPT page on the App Store and click “Update” to get the latest version. If you don’t see this option, your copy of ChatGPT is up to date.

ChatGPT search is available for free without an account. You can use ChatGPT search on the web or download the Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store if you prefer Google’s browser instead of Safari.

Although ChatGPT search is unavailable as a search engine choice in the Safari settings, the app ships with a system extension that lets you set ChatGPT Search as the default engine for web searches performed via Safari’s URL bar. To use it, go to Settings > Apps > Safari and turn on the extension for the Safari profiles such as “Personal” and “Work” listed underneath “Allow Extension In.”
