The iPhone 17 lineup rumored to sport fifty percent more RAM for better Apple Intelligence performance
Apple’s 2025 smartphone lineup, including the base iPhone 17 model, should come with fifty percent more RAM for Apple Intelligence.
Leaker “Digital Chat Station” with solid sources in Apple’s supply chain wrote on Weibo that the iPhone 17, so-called “iPhone 17 Air,” iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will come equipped with twelve gigabytes of RAM, a fifty percent increase.
The current iPhone 16 lineup has only eight gigabytes of RAM, which is the chief reason some of the more complex requests in Apple Intelligence are offloaded to the cloud. With the rumored RAM increase, this year’s iPhone 17 models should be able to run more AI models locally, improving performance.
All iPhone 17 models should have 12GB of RAM to boost AI performance
Extra RAM is also better for multitasking and system responsiveness. And with Apple Intelligence processing eating precious CPU cycles, having more RAM would permit more AI models to run on-device without slowing down the system. Apple’s silicon chief Johny Srouji said in a YouTube interview with Geekerwan that having more RAM also “helps immensely” for tasks like high-end gaming.
At the minimum, Apple Intelligence requires 8GB of RAM and the only Apple devices matching the requirement are the iPhone 15 Pros, the iPhone 16 lineup and Apple silicon-powered iPad and Mac models. We first heard in August 2024, ahead of the iPhone 16 introduction, that Apple’s 2025 smartphone lineup would boost the RAM to twelve gigabytes to allow for edgier AI applications.
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently predicted that the iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will all come with twelve gigabytes of RAM, while the base iPhone 17 model may end up having eight gigabytes of RAM like before, depending on supply chain shortages.
Before that, he said that only the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max would have more RAM. But even if the base iPhone 17 ends up shipping with eight gigabytes of RAM, Kuo is adamant that all iPhone 18 models in 2026 would feature twelve gigabytes of RAM.
