Wireless CarPlay in iOS 18.4 was causing an unknown percentage of drivers connection issues, but Apple’s iOS 18.4.1 update fixes the problem.

Apple released iOS 18.4.1 alongside other updates on April 16, 2025. Per the official iOS 18.4.1 release notes on Apple’s website, the update “addresses a rare issue that prevents wireless CarPlay connection in certain vehicles.”

Complaints on Reddit and X (Twitter) described wireless CarPlay connection issues which began occurring for some after updating to iOS 18.4, released on January 25,2025. The reported problems ranged from CarPlay being stuck in a reconnect loop, to CarPlay not connecting at all or disconnecting intermittently.

To download an over-the-air iOS 18.4.1 update, open the Settings app, navigate to General > Software Update and hit “Install Now” or “Download and Install.” The device will download the update, then verify it before it actually installs it. Your device may restart during the update.

If you’d like your iPhone to automatically download new iOS updates overnight when it’s charging, be sure to turn on automatic updates by going to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and turning on “iOS Updates.”

Aside from a fix for the CarPlays conection issue, iOS 18.4.1 also includes important fixes and security patches detailed on Apple’s support page.

Security patches in iOS 18.4.1

There are two security patches in iOS 18.4.1. One, discovered by Apple and the Google Threat Analysis Group, fixes a problem with the CoreAudio subsystem where a hacker could craft a malicious audio stream that could lead to code execution. Apple cautions that it is “aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on iOS.”

The other addresses RPAC, where an attacker with arbitrary read and write capability may be able to bypass Pointer Authentication. This vulnerability was also “exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on iOS.”

For these reasons, Apple recommends the installation by all users. iPadOS iOS 18.4.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.4.1 (released alongside iOS 18.4.1) also include patches for these vulnerabilities, so be sure to download and install these updates on your iPhones, iPads and Macs in order to get the latest security protections.
