Apple Intelligence, including the latest AI features like Visual Intelligence, should hit China in May, with help from Alibaba and Baidu.
Bloomberg reports that Apple will use its own AI models in China, with local partners like Alibaba providing a system to filter out specific content to appease government censors. Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai recently confirmed his company has partnered with Apple on the initiative. Local regulations require foreign companies like Apple to cooperate with domestic partners to deliver AI features to Chinese customers.
The China launch will reportedly include some of the latest Apple Intelligence features like Visual Intelligence on the iPhone 16 lineup, which will use Baidu as a data source. In contrast, Apple Intelligence in the United States uses on-device processing whenever possible, server-side processing with Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system and external partners like OpenAI for ChatGPT integration.
Rumor: Apple Intelligence launching in China in May
The Bloomberg article says Apple Intelligence will launch in China by the middle of this year, “accelerating a complex undertaking that has required software changes and deep reliance on local partners.” The iPhone maker is said to have “several teams in China and the United States working to adapt its Apple Intelligence platform for the region, aiming for a launch as early as May,” it reads.
iPhone sales have fallen in China due to intense competition from local brands like Huawei, enticing smartphone buyers with sophisticated hardware and AI features. China is Apple’s second-biggest market in terms of revenue.
Apple Intelligence does not currently work for iPhone models purchased in mainland China because Apple has yet to clear regulatory hurdles. Once Apple Intelligence becomes available in China, all compatible iPhones sold within the country will be able to run these AI features. iPhones purchased outside of China won’t be able to access the Apple Intelligence features localized for the Chinese market.
