AirPods Pro 3 with heart rate monitoring “still many months away” from launching
AirPods Pro 3 should embed optical sensors in each earbud to monitor your heart rate, but they’re “many months away” from launching.
That’s according to Mark Gurman, who claimed on Bloomberg today that the next AirPods Pro featuring heart rate monitoring aren’t imminent.
This is obvious to anyone who has been following Apple; the iPhone maker released AirPods Pro 2 in September 2024 and it surely won’t obsolete them until they’ve been selling for at least one year. Which is to say, don’t expect AirPods Pro 2 with heart rate monitoring util September 2025 at the earliest.
AirPods Pro 3 with heart rate monitoring in September?
Gurman’s comment came just as Apple unveiled Powerbeats Pro 2, its latest sporty earbuds with significant improvements such as heart rate monitoring, active noise cancellation, the H2 chip, adaptiev audio and more. They are the first Apple audio product to feature embedded heart rate monitoring.
The feature uses the same technology as the optical heart sensor in your Apple Watch. The LED sensors pulses more than a hundred times per second, shining light on the arteries in your ear to measure blood flow, used to calcualte your heart rate. Select fitness apps are compatible with the feature, and the built-in Health app automatically logs heart rate data from the earbuds when you start a workout.
In September 2024, Apple unveiled two new AirPods 4 models, with and without active noise cancellation, plus the new AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Max with USB-C charging and new colors. AirPods Pro 2 are currently Apple’s flagship earbuds, and the only AirPods that have hearing health features.
AirPods Pro 2 also double as an FDA-approved heading aid and let you perform a hearing test right on the device. They support other features designed to protect your hearing like Media Assist, which boosts certain parts of speech or instruments within a soundtrack, and another one which reduces louder sounds.
