Apple’s most significant release of the year ”months away” from shipping
Apple’s rumored smart home hub, which some folks call a HomePod with a display, is not ready yet and will allegedly take months to ship.
Mark Gurman wrote on Bloomberg that an Apple-branded smart home hub is still ”months away” from shipping. He previously called such a device ”Apple’s most significant release of the year.”
In December 2024, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo provided a more concrete timeframe on Medium, saying the device will be previewed at the WWDC 2025 and launched sometime in the third quarter of the year, probably in September or October when the latest Apple phones, tablets, watches and computers land on store shelves.

Gurman reported earlier the accessory will be Apple’s ”first step toward a bigger role in the smart home,” saying it will let people ”control appliances, conduct FaceTime chats, and handle other tasks.” It will basically be a smart display smaller than iPad and more affordable. It would also work as a security camera itself.
Apple could have companion accessories, Gurman speculated, including a Face ID-equipped doorbell and dedicated indoor security cameras. Apple’s current smart home strategy revolves around the Apple TV media player and its Siri-powered HomePod smart speakers. iPads, HomePods and Apple TVs also double as home hubs connecting all smart home appliances and letting you manage them in the Home app, use them with your voice and more.
Gurman also predicted the device would feature a home screen that you could customize with widgets, similar to how you can add widgets to your iPhone’s Home Screen. He speculated that Apple might even offer a tabletop base with a speaker as a companion accessory to which the hub could be attached.
Gurman made other predictions, including an Apple tabletop device with a robotic arm and a display that would swivel and rotate to follow the user around the room, a smart bar with Apple TV and HomePod functionalities and an iPad docking accessory that could be placed on a kitchen counter or nightstand.
