Looks like M4-equipped MacBook Air and iPad Air are just around the corner
Apple’s retail stores are running low on iPad Air tablets and MacBook Air laptops, indicating refreshed M4 models are soon to be announced.
Mark Gurman writes at Bloomberg that iPad Air and MacBook Air stock is “dwindling,” which could indicate an imminent refresh. After checking the online Apple store and the company’s brick-and-mortar locations in the United States, he concluded that the Cupertino tech giant is about to update its most popular consumer tablet and laptop.
Gurman believes the next MacBook Air will be powered by Apple’s M4 chip, which is also used in the redesigned Mac mini and the latest iPad Pro and iMac models. The next iPad Air should, too, run the M4 chip, but its design shouldn’t deviate much from the current model.

Earlier rumors claimed Apple might equip the next iPad Air with the M3 chip, considering the current model is stuck with the M2. However, Gurman reported earlier that Apple may skip the M3 silicon for the iPad Air lineup entirely.
“The new iPad Airs — codenamed J607, J608, J637 and J638 — will be more about specification upgrades than design changes,” he wrote in a January 2025 edition of this Power On newsletter. “The current version, introduced last year, has the M2 chip. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if the 2025 models get bumped up to the M4, matching the iPad Pro,” he added.
Gurman also predicted that both the new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Airs will use an updated version of Apple’s Magic Keyboard. Unlike the revamped Magic Keyboard for M4 iPad Pro, which has an aluminum top case, its M4 iPad Air counterpart is expected to feature a function row of keys. Cellular versions of the next iPad Air are expected to use Apple’s in-house 5G modem instead of a Qualcomm modem.
