Adobe Acrobat has gained contract intelligence capabilities that enable its AI chatbot to decipher contract jargon in PDF documents like legal agreements.

The software can recognize complicated legal language in scanned contracts and other PDF files to summarize their meaning in simpler terms that are much easier to understand. It’s a pretty cool feature I wish I had earlier to save me from the exploitative fine print in gym membership contracts.

The Photoshop maker mentioned an Adobe-commissioned survey, claiming 70 percent of respondents have signed legal documents without fully understanding all of the terms. “Customers open billions of contracts in Adobe Acrobat each month and AI can be a game changer in helping simplify their experience,” said Adobe Document Cloud lead Abhigyan Modi.

Adobe Acrobat can now distill legal documents

The new contract intelligence capabilities understand legal finesse in contracts. It can distill lengthy contracts to their essence, distilling key takeaways such as amounts, important deadlines, specific policies, etc. It also generates citations and recommended questions based on document contents.

The feature can even compare ten different versions of the same legal document to discover discrepancies and compare between vendor agreements. It sounds like a great feature and a compelling use case for AI. It should be convenient when starting a new job, closing a business deal, or signing other legal documents.

Adobe explains:

When reviewing an apartment lease, AI tools can highlight key details like deposit rules and pet policies. Gym contracts can become clearer with explanations of cancellation policies. For phone contracts, AI can quickly spot pesky fees. Even when reviewing a job offer, AI can break down complex terms, such as salary, benefits and non-compete clauses, helping provide consumers with more confidence.

Adobe has been adding AI to its apps before AI was cool, with features like generative fill and seamless background removal in Photoshop. It continues to regularly infuse the Creative Cloud suite of apps with new generative AI features.

Pricing and availability

The new contract intelligence capabilities are available in Acrobat AI Assistant on desktop, mobile and web starting today, February 6, 2025. At launch, the feature only works with English-language contracts, with support for additional languages coming later. Acrobat AI Assistant is a $5/month upgrade for Acrobat users with free or paid individual accounts. For further information, visit the Adobe website.
