AppleCare+ for all iPhones now costs extra $0.50/month

Apple has quetly increased monthly prices of AppleCare+ subscriptions across all current iPhone models in the lineup by 50 cents.

The new prices went into effect last week for both the standard AppleCare+ iPhone plan and its more expensive Theft and Loss variant, which offers two incidents of theft or loss coverage every twelve months. This price hike does not affect AppleCare+ plans for iPad, Mac and other Apple products.

The move could dissuade some iPhone owners from signing up for month-to-month AppleCare+ coverage as the upfront plan is now even more affordable than the subscription over the same period. Like any insurance, AppleCare+ only makes financial sense if used. Otherwise, you’re basically paying for peace of mind.

AppleCare+ for iPhone is getting pricier as a subscription

MacRumors reports that the standard ‌AppleCare‌+ plan for the iPhone 16 models now costs $10.49/month instead of the prior $10/month price.

“The 50 cent price increase applies to all available ‌AppleCare‌+ plans for Apple’s current ‌iPhone‌ lineup, and it includes both the standard plan and the Theft and Loss plan,” it reads. Prices of the AppleCare+ service fees and the upfront two-year AppleCare plan have stayed the same as before.

AppleCare+ for iPhone includes battery coverage, unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection and other perks like 24/7 priority access to technical support. Each incident is subject to a service fee: screen or back glass damage is $29 and other accidental damage is $99, per the official AppleCare+ for iPhone page.

All iPhones include a one-year limited warranty covering manufacturing defects but not accidental damage, such as a cracked screen or a broken camera. The warranty also excludes damage caused by “reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct.”

Upfront AppleCare+ plans are being phased out

Apple is also phasing out the upfront two-year AppleCare+ plans in favor of ongoing subscriptions; Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said the upfront option is no longer available when purchasing AppleCare+ in stores or on the iPhone itself, only remaining available on the online store as an option at the time of purchase.

Gurman has also learned that Apple instructed retail employees to justify the price hike as “designed to lower upfront costs and prevent future gaps in coverage.”

Also, the Apple store employees are allegedly encouraged to nudge customers toward the pricier AppleCare+ with Theft & Loss plans, which costs $14/month for the latest iPhones and provides a replacement device for $149.
