Citi Flex Pay, a buy now, pay later service, will soon be available when using Apple Pay for purchases over $75 in the United States.

For this to work, you must have a Citi credit card added to the Wallet app on your iPhone. You can also add your card to the Citi mobile app or the website. Citi’s support page clarifies that the feature will start rolling out in February. Flex Pay can be used when shopping at participating retailers in apps and online.

After choosing your Citi card from the Apple Pay prompt at checkout, you’ll need to choose the Pay Later option and then Citi Flex Pay. Pick a payment plan that works best for you, authorize with Face ID or Touch ID and your purchase will be split into monthly payments of a fixed amount. UpgradedPoints first reported on this.

You’ll also earn rewards on your Citi card when using this option with Apple Pay. However, subscriptions and recurring transactions don’t work with Flex Pay.

You pay no interest and no fee with the default 3-month payback period, but longer durations require a monthly fee. This seems to be a limited-time deal because the fine print states that “this offer may no longer be available after June 30, 2025.”

Apple used to provide a buy now, pay later service of its own, dubbed Apple Pay Later, but nixed it last year. Instead, the Cupertino tech giant has partnered with third-party payment providers such as Affirm, Klarna and Synchrony.

It’s wroth pointing out that Citi’s payback options aren’t as developed as Affirm’s. Another thing to remember is that Flex Pay counts the entire purchase amount against your credit limit.
